Pike was back to calling Roz by his first name. This whole thing was really weird. Zane didn’t even know they were friends. But now Hayden Pike was on the phone, asking about Rozanov like they’re best buddies, or long lost lovers. He’s begging, he’s desperate, and Zane has never been more confused in his life.
When Zane Boodram receives a text from his wife after their almost plane crash in Tampa, telling him to please call this number because there’s someone on the other end who desperately needs to speak to his Captain, he definitely is not expecting Hayden Pike of the Montreal Voyageurs to be the person on the other end of the call.
Whilst he tries very hard to listen to Barrett and mind his own business about the whole thing, he’s got one question that he can’t stop swirling around his head.

Summary
Ilya Rozanov has been drafted by Boston, the number one pick overall, but his father doesn't want him moving to America and so takes steps to block his visa. He's going to have to go back to Russia and stay there forever and that, thinks Shane Hollander, is wrong.
It's so wrong that Shane can't stop himself from doing something about it. Even though that something is the most reckless, the only reckless thing he's ever done in his life. He marries Rozanov in secret, to keep him out of Russia and put him on a path to Canadian citizenship.
Shane's got a five-year plan to get him there and when you have a plan nothing can go wrong. Right? Right. When you have a solid plan and a marriage that's on paper only there's no risk of feelings getting involved. Not on Rozanov's part and certainly not on Shane's.

In my mind, a “what could have happened if they met in a different way and made different choices.” It’s sweet, has (mostly/eventual) soft landings, and features many puppies who absolutely did not ask to be a part of this, and one very dramatic chiweenie who did.

Or, even more alarmingly, he is correct, and then he is certain to be told to fuck off, and possibly punched in the face. The man shifts, eyes drifting from his drink up to Scott and— well, there's no denying it. The captain of the Boston Raiders is drunk in Scott's neighborhood dive bar.
"Fuck," the response is slow, the delayed reaction of molasses spilling out of a jar carelessly knocked over on the kitchen counter. "I must have overdone it. I have summoned the Ghost of Hockey Past."
Scott could just leave. He could turn on a heel, and leave this drunk asshole to discover on his own what consequences are.
Because he's stupid, though, because he's nothing if not a responsible captain even when the drunken idiot in question isn't even one of his own teammates, and yes, because a small part of him can't help but love a good train wreck when he sees one, he sits down instead.
