When a shell goes off, men crumple and tear like delicate silks. They bleed, they scream, and no demigod in distant myth is immune to that. Myths are simply the paper they're put on, the people that remember to recite them. Paper and people do not stand against things like shells.
Ron was still frighteningly human in the sense that the force of a shell knocked most men on their asses if they were lucky. If they weren't lucky, it was the tearing horror of shrapnel that brought them to their knees. Those things didn't happen to the strange mythical creatures that haunt a battlefield.

As he sees his end draw near, he talks to a fellow soldier over the radio, finding unexpected comfort in his final moments…only they’re not final. He wakes up in the wreckage, and can’t seem to shake the soldier’s—Simon’s—voice.

The paper crinkled when he dragged it out from where he had stuffed it into his backpack, already ripped in the corners and scuffed from the harsh treatment when he ran to the gate earlier. He skimmed over the tags again, the first one being the one that caught his eye ‘military romance’, the rest of the tags weren’t too important as he ripped the paper. Sue him for latching onto it, maybe it was so hilarious that he could get through at least half the flight not bored out of his mind.
The ripped brown paper revealed a smooth black cover, a tunnel ending in a white circle with a soldier carrying another one over his shoulders, the title in plain white letters ‘Solider heart’. Soap flipped it, finding the reviews and a simple summary on the back. The author being anonymous, only the initials of what most likely already was pseudo name, ‘RS’. It held many awards, even called internationally best selling romance novel of it genre, which raised some eyebrows.
What had started as the longest flights of his life, turned out to be the shortest.

Plus, there’s something enticing about this. Gaz is fully relaxed, his back rising and falling with his steady breathing. He seems so at ease, so comfortable here in this life that they’ve built, and it makes Price’s heart clench with gratitude. It’s so damn hard for people like them to feel safe enough anywhere to be this vulnerable, and he’d be a rotten liar if he said something about that level of trust doesn’t do it for him.

He wants to tell Ghost that none of them fear him. He wants to say that he loves him– not the same as Soap, but a deep, river-run way all the same, a kind of erosion in his chest that gave way to the soft earth underneath. Gaz trusts Ghost with his life, and then some.
He doesn’t say any of those things. Ghost isn’t ready to hear them yet, but Gaz meets his eyes in the mirror with a soft, proud smile and he hopes that Simon feels some of the message all the same.
