We sat in comfortable silence, smoking and absorbing the late night sounds of Baker Street which filtered through the faded newsprint. Holmes reclined his head, releasing a finely shaped ring of cigar smoke which floated out before him. I supplied my own smaller ring, purely for the joy of doing so, and watched as it wobbled upwards. The two circles floated around each other before breaking apart and dissolving into a single cloud upon meeting.

His other arm came over my shoulder and plucked a cigarette from the case, holding it to my mouth. His arm on my shoulder was heavy and warm and made my stomach do funny things. I could not tear my gaze from the reflection before me. My pink cheeks and the sagging blazer made me look smaller and younger than I was. Raffles stood dark and imposing behind me, his arm draped over me. In the reflection, I could see that his attention was on my mouth. I watched my own reflection in the glass as my mouth parted to accept the offering, white paper against the pink of my lips.
