Summary
This is how it feels to be Anakin Skywalker.
You thought that being free would be like finally going home. But there is no home- your Coruscant apartment has long ago since been abandoned, and there is only this bunker. You have to duck to fit through the doorway and you’re so much taller than you used to be. Your proportions are entirely too wrong to fit here and your rasping breaths are harsh in this otherwise still and silent place. Wherever you go, you will always feel like an invader.
But she does not treat you as such. She puts her hand in your gloved one and guides you to her bedroom. It’s sparse, clearly the bedroom of someone in hiding. But for you, even a lone bed is a luxury. It has been years since you’ve even seen a bed. You are a monster now, and monsters lurk outside of bedrooms, monsters do not get warm places to sleep. Uncertainly you stand at the foot of the bed now, as if waiting for her to scream at you to leave.
She just pats the spot beside her, invites you closer. She is not afraid of monsters.

Her heart sinks at the contact name. Mom. Someone has her number now.
I know this message wasn’t meant for me, the text begins. I didn’t mean to listen to it, but I heard the first part. I want to say I’m sorry for your loss. And I’m sorry that I took your Mom’s number. But if you do want someone to talk to, don’t hesitate to use it.
Anakin’s breathing turns ragged. Like her lungs forgot how to work.

“I have to go away now,” he says. His voice still sounds like a robot’s voice, but it’s not deep like before. Despite the flatness to it, it’s got a melancholy lilt. It sounds like heartbreak.
Vader kneels and lays a gloved hand on Luke’s face, then Leia’s. There’s a garbled sound, almost like sniffling. “I… do not know when I will return.”
“He’s only here to say goodbye, ” Mom chimes in. Her arms are crossed, her eyes weary, her mouth frowning like always. Luke knows his Mom is not terribly old, but he cannot imagine her ever looking young, either.

Freshly fitted with a new suit, Vader tries to make amends. As he works to rebuild cities, his family works to rebuild themselves.

It made her want to do something bold, something daring— things Senator Amidala would never even dream of doing. And she wasn’t Senator Amidala right now. She was just Padmé— and Padmé wanted to be with Anakin, to feel and touch and know him in every way you could know a person. Turning back to him, Padmé did her best impression of a seductive look, tilting her chin down and glancing up at him through her lashes.
“Let’s go swimming,” she said, reaching up to slowly slide the strap of her dress down her shoulder.
On their honeymoon, Anakin and Padmé take advantage of how isolated the Naboo lake country truly is.

Summary
This was likely the reason he was the only slave in the Temple, yet also why they treated him well. He was a special case, he was a valuable asset. They wanted to control him, and above all, they didn’t want to lose him. So he remained property. But the Jedi didn’t call him a slave—that was not socially accepted in the Inner Rim.
A young Anakin still believes he's a slave in the Jedi Temple. With the Clone Wars raging across the galaxy, there is no chance for anyone to tell him any different.

Summary
The best day of Anakin’s life is simultaneously the worst of his mother’s. Though he knows that Qui-Gon tried hard to free him, and that his mother would have preferred that it were him, a big part of him is far happier that it is his mother who will no longer have to slave away without any hope of seeing returns, even if it means that he will not.
There are a lot of ‘not’s that come with not being free.
Not leaving Tatooine.
Not becoming a Jedi.
Not seeing every star system in the galaxy.
And, a secret part of him whispers, not having to leave my mother.
So, earnestly, over his mother’s quiet weeping, he thanks Qui-Gon Jinn for making sure that at least one Skywalker is free, even if it's not him.

What happens when a slave boy doesn't become a Jedi.
