Summary
When Harry's job takes him to a crime scene with the body of a young boy who looks just like Cuno, his despair over the state of the world sets in again, and he starts to drink more and more. But Kim - his new partner - cannot lose someone he cares about again. He is determined to show Harry what it truly means to have a purpose.
With obvious expertise, Kim walks Harry through the immediately diagnosable faults with the car. For starters, she’s missing both her engine and battery, and her interior has been thoroughly picked clean of anything valuable, leaving her riddled with empty wounds where a radio or mileometer would be. Her paint is scratched, presumably from minor crashes or general damage at the scrapyard. Her windows are smashed, and one of her doors has such a large dent by the handle that it won’t close fully.
If she were Harry’s car, he’d probably leave her running with the unit door closed and let her pass away peacefully. But Kim’s hands are all over her, pointing out her every flaw like a surgeon determined to save her life.

Kim doesn’t call for backup, which is why it’s strange that he hears a Coupris 40 pull up - distinctive engine sound, the low muted growl like a kitten in a paper bag that he’s got tuned up on his own Kineema to 11, Dom had helped him with the muffler work - don’t think about that now, don’t think about that now - and he knows it’s a fellow RCM officer, because he can hear the shitty squeaking brakes that seem to be so standard to RCM garages. Someone from the 57th driving by, he thinks, or maybe the neighbors called in the gunshots. Concerned citizen. It’s likely Officer Cotillard, he thinks, or Officer Moreau, please, not Fontaine, he thinks, or I really might kill myself. He is a little hysterical, he thinks, but it’s hard not to be with Dom’s hot slick blood coating his hands, his arms, his knees.
But it is none of these officers. Instead, he hears, impossibly, the clatter of high heels, an unfamiliar voice, cursing. High and rasping, Vespertine accent. He’d be able to pick out that voice anywhere. “Vic, call for help to the 57th,” the unfamiliar voice says. “Code 58, officer down.”

Kim’s showers are efficient, usually five minutes or less, except -
VISUAL CALCULUS: Except sometimes they’re not.
ELECTROCHEMISTRY: You know what he’s doing in there!
INLAND EMPIRE: You do.
PHYSICAL INSTRUMENT: You’re both men, are you not? Men in your early forties, but that’s nothing - and twice a week, Kim takes longer than usual in the shower.
CONCEPTUALIZATION: Fifteen minutes. Usually in the mornings, before you drag yourself off your couch.
DRAMA: He likes the plausible deniability. You’re not up yet, he doesn’t have to feel guilty.
INLAND EMPIRE: Sometimes, though, he does it at night. One night - the dog days of summer, he can’t sleep, no one in the entire city is sleeping, if the irritability of the precinct, the circles under everyone’s eyes, and the crime rate is to be believed - he gets up and goes into the bathroom. You’re almost asleep, drifting, but wake to Kim’s bare feet padding through from bedroom to bathroom.
PERCEPTION: You hear the groan of pipes, the sound of water hitting the tub. The pull of the shower curtain.
