    Summary

Pantalone draws a shaky breath. "I was in your office earlier," he begins, "looking for a copy of your will. You don't have a will. Did you know that?"

Dottore says nothing. Pantalone takes a drag of his cigarette and continues.

"One of your subordinates came in looking for something. He reeked of antiseptic. I had to send him away."

    Because he smelled like antiseptic?

    "Because he smelled like you."

Alternatively: The funeral proceedings of a man who dared to fly too close to the sun. Forsaken by all, survived by one.

    Summary

She tugs on Escoffier’s arm, beckoning her to the battlefield, which now looks like a storm had torn through an egg farm, shattered shells and liquid yolks everywhere. Kaeya watches as they simultaneously freeze and egg their enemies into oblivion, loud cackling continuing to echo throughout the domain.

He shudders at the thought of Furina being on his team, although he knows with the right prodding, he could possibly harness and unleash that chaos on others instead. Like his brother, for one, who was probably a part of this setup. And maybe even Albedo… how else did Escoffier get into his apartment?

There isn't enough wine in Mondstadt for me to handle your chaos, he wants to say. But he knows that saying it aloud would be giving Furina the satisfaction, so he says nothing, merely continuing to eat in silence.

    For now.

Alternatively: A spontaneous, "hot potato" type of collaboration filled with the antics of two chaotic main characters and a bunch of their loved ones who get pulled into their crazy shenanigans.

    Summary

"Albedo," Kaeya announces, slamming open the door to the alchemist's office without knocking for the third time this week, "I need to open an investigation."

Albedo does not look up from his work. "Whatever bullshit you are about to start, please leave me out of it."

"It is a matter of national security."

    "I seriously doubt that."

Alternatively: Following the vigilante partnership of the Darknight Hero and the Spindrift Knight, Kaeya decides to open an investigation.

    Summary

He has never known an impulse to heal until the day the banker crossed his gurney, battered and bruised and covered in a number of stab wounds that for once, Dottore did not long to tear open but to stitch together. Knowing he was at death's door, the man had still smiled, and he spoken to Dottore with such tranquility that Dottore had known, then, that this man was worth keeping, and for once had longed not to break, but to heal.

And it is with Pantalone at his side that Dottore has learned that perhaps he is not alone in this world, for here is another like him. Here is another man who does not know kindness, for the world has forsaken him, too. Your violent, bloodstained hands in mine, at the softness of your touch I come undone.

Alternatively: An attempt by broken men to define those delicate things which they were never taught. It is a shame, indeed, that they have not known such grace until each other.

    Summary

Eyes widening slightly as it hits him, Albedo mirrors her frown. "I see… if you are referring to the recent behavior of our partners, which I believe you are, then yes, I have been experiencing something rather troubling, as you say."

Eula heads toward the couch and takes a seat, crossing one leg over the other. "I know they don't quite see eye to eye," she begins with a sigh. "But it seems something happened a few nights ago, and I'd like to get to the bottom of it."

Albedo bites down on his lower lip. "I see what you mean—just to be sure; are you referring to their, ah, exchange during truth or dare the other night? It certainly did get rather tense, at a point."

    "Precisely."

Alternatively: After an eventful night at Angel’s Share among friends, Albedo and Eula must deal with the aftermath of mutual misunderstandings and unspoken tension between their partners.

They decide to intervene before it gets worse.

    Summary

"What?" the man continues. "Never heard one of your test subjects talk before, doctor?"

And, well, it's not quite that, exactly, because of course this isn't the first time one of his test subjects has spoken to him while on the gurney… it's just that typically, they're wide-eyed and frantic, wasting every ounce of their remaining strength to pointlessly plead for him and his segments to spare their lives.

And yet, this man is different.

He lies strapped to an operating table beneath the cold, clinical gaze and scalpel of the infamously insane second Harbinger, slowly dying of a stab wound, and yet he remains impossibly calm, the ghost of a smile on his lips and his voice smooth as velvet.

    How peculiar.

"It's a shame we have to kill this one," 35 remarks. "I find that I quite like him."

    Summary

"You have said yourself that you are the most selfish of all the segments," Pantalone had pointed out, then. "Such an effort doesn't particularly seem to align with this claim."

"Living and dying together has a way of binding two parties together rather closely, as I have said to you many times before." You are a vital organ to my functioning, just as I am to yours. I am keeping you, on borrowed time as we may be. "Is it not selfish of me to want to keep my only friend by my side for far longer than either of us deserves?"

And this, Pantalone had been unable to argue with—for how could he, when he, too, holds such a desire? It is only human to want, after all, and to want for the whole soul of another to be inextricably bound to your own is perhaps the most selfish want of all. Such is how a desire as intimate as this one finds itself in the hearts of Teyvat's most heartless men. By the gods who have forsaken us, what a pair in hell we make.

Alternatively: A collection of memories, a timeline of a relationship. Call it what you will; it does not matter—for we are men on borrowed time, and men such as us ought never to have experienced these moments at all.

    Summary

The Doctor has a particularly nasty penchant for causing issues at the concern of international security, and unfortunately, this means that reports—of which there are several—have had to to be written up regarding his activities, and unfortunately, this means that someone has to sort through all of the existing files and figure out how much of a problem Dottore's penchant for international terrorism could shape up to be.

And unfortunately, that person who is sorting through said files happens to be Childe. Because the Archons and Celestia hate him. Obviously.

Alternatively: Childe embarks on the arduous task of sorting through intelligence reports on various individuals who the Fatui are keeping tabs on. The story also features the intelligence reports themselves, which I have embedded throughout the work to create what is hopefully something of an interactive experience.

    Summary

It has to be a coincidence, then, that Javert is the one singular cop with whom Jean Valjean has had any interaction with. It must be merely Javert's zealous obsession with him that is the reason for this phenomenon, and the fact that Javert is the only policeman Jean Valjean has ever had the occasion to take notice of in all his time in France must simply be a mark of Javert's dedication to his own craft.

Certainly nothing beyond that. No, that would be illogical. Ludicrous, really. Truly inconceivable.

But now, as Jean Valjean places everything else in his life on hold for just the briefest of moments to give thought to the matter, the stark, horrifying realization begins to dawn upon him sure as the sun rises in the east—it is not that Inspector Javert is the only cop Valjean has ever taken deliberate note of; rather, it is that Valjean has simply never beheld a single cop in all his time in France who was not Inspector Javert.

Alternatively: Javert is the only cop in all of France. That's it, that's the fic.

    Summary

A moment passes between them—a comfortable silence, a mutual understanding, an acknowledgement of the passage of time. How time has changed them both, master and student. How the years have shaped them. Changed them too, as the cruel passage of time often does. How it brings them back together, still, even now.

"You know," Childe says finally, "you never did answer my question."

"Hm," is all Skirk has to say in response, picking up her guitar from her side and resting it in her lap. "I suppose I didn't."

"Well? Why are you here, then?"

Skirk laughs. "You never relent, do you?"

"Of course not," says Childe. "You taught me that."

Alternatively: It has been quite some time since Childe and Skirk last saw one another. When Childe finds her lingering outside the Fontaine Research Institute, a conversation comes to pass—one of life, of death, and of the fate of the world.

    Summary

"Yes," Viktor says finally, a faint laugh escaping his lips, "I suppose I have aged." And how wonderful is this, to finally speak to his partner again? To smile, to joke, to laugh—oh, how he has missed this. It is no wonder he cannot let Jayce die in that snowstorm; Viktor cannot afford to miss out on this. Not in any lifetime.

"You—wait." Jayce's eyes widen. "You're the one who saved me and my mom when I was a kid, aren't you?"

Viktor nods. "Yes… I suppose that I am unable to simply let you die." His lips quirk into a wry smile. "A weakness we both share when it comes to one another, it would seem."

Alternatively: Trapped eternally in what remains of a world he destroyed, Viktor has had nothing but time to reflect on his mistakes. Another world's iteration of his deceased partner finds himself in Viktor's devastated timeline, and of all Viktor's mistakes, Jayce was always the biggest one.

Let's run it back. Maybe this time, we can do something right.

    Summary

"I am a scholar of linguistics," Alhaitham reminds Kaveh for what he assumes is approximately the fourth time in this conversation, "it is not my responsibility to be able to calculate angles and dimensions and whatnot."

Kaveh raises an eyebrow. "You say you're a linguistic expert, and yet you refuse to even try to understand the most universal language of all?"

"Arithmetic has no bearing on practical conversation," Alhaitham remarks. "You're wasting your time with something that holds no value outside of an academic context."

"I can't believe this," says Kaveh, huffing a breath of exasperation and throwing his hands up in the air. "You're literally—you are lecturing me on my discipline's bearing on social situations?"

Alternatively: It starts, as it tends to do, with an argument over something trivial—in this instance, the value of mathematics. It devolves, because of course it does, into the Sisyphean task of trying to make sense of something which is impossible to make sense of... that thing being calculus. Obviously. What else would it be?

    Summary

"Well, in the spirit of Windblume, I’ve found an interesting way for us to spend the evening." Looking at Kaeya and Eula, she continues with an endearing smile. "Since our partners are more on the— ahem, reserved side, we can get to know one another better this way. Especially since it does involve alcohol…"

Jean chooses this moment to chime in. "Lisa, Eula, Kaeya, why did you bring us all here?"

"Well," Kaeya answers, "that's simple. All of you need to socialize more, and it’s Windblume. What better time, honestly?"

Albedo, so quietly under his breath to the point where his words very nearly go unnoticed: "This is going to go horribly wrong, isn’t it?"

Alternatively: In the spirit of Windblume, Lisa, Eula, and Kaeya decide to drag Jean, Diluc, and Albedo to the Angel's Share for drinks and an innocent game of truth or dare—a triple date, in other words. Chaos ensues, naturally; with this group, why wouldn't it?

    Summary

After seven minutes of uncharacteristic silence—yes, Diluc counted—Kaeya clears his throat and sets down his drink, swirling the liquid around in his glass and carefully avoiding Diluc’s gaze. “Hey, so I want you to meet someone.”

His attention preoccupied with the inventory clipboard in his hand, Diluc doesn’t bother taking much time to formulate a response. “What,” he tosses out absentmindedly, almost as a joke, “you want me to meet your boyfriend or something?”

Kaeya blinks, his posture visibly stiffening. “Huh,” he remarks. “Didn’t know your informants were that adept.”

“Of course they are; I only hire the best of the—” Diluc stops dead in his tracks as his brain finally catches up and processes Kaeya’s words. “Wait. You have a what?”

Alternatively: A grave error in judgement on Kaeya's part leads to the introduction Diluc and Albedo to one another. Saying the two dislike one another would be perhaps the greatest understatement the nation of Mondstadt has ever heard.

“Why are you telling me all of this?”

“Well, part of it is for administrative reasons,” Varka admits. “But part of it is because, well…” He sighs, leaning back in the plush backing of his chair. “I’ve never had a son of my own, but you’re the closest thing I’ve got to one.”

Kaeya blinks, not entirely sure how to process such a statement. It’s not that he doesn’t believe it to be true—the fact of the matter is that ever since the night Crepus Ragnvindr died, Varka had taken Kaeya under his wing, given him a place to live, and more or less done all the other little things a parent might do for his child. And still, to hear it admitted aloud is quite a strange thing.

“What do I do now?” he asks, more to himself than anything else. “I have nowhere else to go.”

All in all, the Knights of Favonius are presently a mess, everyone is stressed and overworked to Celestia and back, and these Abyss Mages happen to be today’s target of Eula’s ire.

And yet, she never gets the chance, because out of seemingly nowhere another figure has appeared, donning a black cloak and mask and killing all of the remaining Abyss Mages in one fell swoop.

Sheathing her claymore and muttering under her breath, Eula swears a solemn oath of vengeance. Mark her words, this man will be found out. And when she finds him, Eula is going to give him hell.

Grantaire does not resent the revolution; rather, he resents the way it has wrapped its delicate fingers around his neck, pressing down into his throat saying, see what happens when you try to escape. He resents the way something he does not hold a single shred of belief in is so closely intertwined with someone he believes in beyond a shadow of a doubt, and of course he had to go and fall in love with the one person who will never have him.

    “I know where you live.”

It’s probably a good thing that Ximena calls the four of them to dinner then, because Vi is certain she was about to bear witness to several death threats. “What can I say? This place has grown on me.” And while Kaeya is known for his silver tongue and half-truths, this truth is one he tells in full. “Over time, my life has had less and less to do with Khaenr’iah,” he remarks, “and more and more to do with Mondstadt. It’s only natural that I feel closer to this place…especially considering it’s the home of those whom I love.”

“You speak as if we can escape Khaenri’ah’s legacy completely,” Albedo notes. “You do realize such a thing is impossible for people like us, do you not?”

“Ah.” Diluc hands a tall glass of Dandelion Wine to a woman waiting nearby. “I meant to ask you about him, actually.”

“Oh?” Now it’s Kaeya’s turn to raise an eyebrow. “What about him?” Kaeya raises his glass to his lips, peering at Diluc over the rim. A warning delivered with a diamond-pupiled eye. Careful what you say next.

Alternatively: After the threat against Mondstadt is defeated, the citizenry flocks to the taverns to celebrate. Among them are Kaeya and Diluc, being remarkably civil to one another, and between them passes a discussion regarding a certain alchemist and a battle on a bridge.
