Because it made him feel good. Useful, for once.
By taking the beatings on himself, he could delude himself into thinking he was making a difference. That he too could become a hero.That's why it's such a problem when Todoroki Shouto joins his class—because for once Izuku just watches, only feeling glad that it wasn't him.
