Together they make their way to Zoya's chambers, the closest private room. They walk in and as soon as Zoya closes the door behind her, Genya is on her, pulling the collar of her kefta to the side to expose an angry red mark on the side of her neck and sighs.
Zoya shakes her off and takes a step away from her friend, but says nothing. Genya simply stares pleadingly at her. “Zoya…”
“Don’t.”
“I must. It’s my job.” Zoya sighs and turns away from her friend. “You promised me this would stop.”
Zoya walks over to her drink cart and pours herself a glass of bourbon. “It did stop. For a while, it did.”

She notices Zoya staring at her face, narrowing her eyes, searching. Genya knows that if her friend catches even a glimpse of sympathy in her eyes, she’d give a sharp shake of her head and send her on her way with a curt “Goodnight” before shutting the door in her face.
