“Based on everything we know of the Fireflies, it’s really hard for me to believe they would all of a sudden make their priority to take a selfless and altruistic journey across a world full of raiders and Infected to look for innocent people to immunize,” Joel shook his head, “And how could they get vaccines to thousands with the scarce resources they had? Remember how we had to cross the country to get to one place that had proper equipment? They never gave us the chance to think about or ask how they planned on mass-producing and distributing the vaccine.”

In typical use, “incest” is used to describe a taboo affair, either consensually or nonconsensually, between close relatives, like siblings or cousins, or in the most despairing of situations the romantic and sexual interactions between a parent and child. In this story, however, incest refers to the loving relationship between Violet and Klaus Baudelaire that ballooned beyond the typical feelings brothers and sisters have for one another into something both romantic and sexual. While aware of the way the outer world would view their union, Violet and Klaus could never view this development as anything but inevitable and right in a world where most everything else seemed wrong.
