For a strange, suspended moment it almost feels like she’s watching it happen to someone else.
Then the rest of the world rushes in all at once.The roar of an engine.
A horn – maybe hers.
The violent snap of her seatbelt locking against her chest.
The sound of Ted promising he’ll wait outside for her.
The headlights fill the windshield.Her hands move before she decides and the car moves with them and she gets almost a bit of the road between them, but she knows it's not enough.
There’s just enough time for one silly thought to flicker through her mind.I’m going to be late for dinner.
Then metal crashes into metal.

Hated himself for looking, hated himself for his body’s response.

Except today, it isn’t.
He pushes the ajar door open, expecting Rebecca to be immersed in paperwork or emails, a tea cup on her desk but the sight stops him cold.
She isn’t alone.
Matthijs is there, standing close as she gathers her belongings, laughing at something he’s said. The sound hits Ted like a sucker punch.
Rebecca’s laugh has never hurt before.
This is a story about how two years apart changed Ted and Rebecca's bond.
