Summary
Watching Iwaizumi like this, Tooru feels like a spectator of his life, not like he’s actually here, trying to be a part of it. It’s bizarre. They never used to need to fill every silence when they revolved around each other like planets in orbit - unequivocal, absolute. This insecurity is like a sudden knife to Tooru’s gut carving out the reality of the matter, which is, ultimately, that he doesn’t know how to be around Iwa-chan anymore.
It feels like they’re a rubber band being stretched back back back, pulled taught with a tension that will only resolve itself when it snaps. Tooru doesn’t know what it means for them if they let it snap.
Oikawa visits Irvine, California.

Summary
It became more obvious the more friends that Kageyama made. It wasn’t wires getting crossed, and it wasn’t the lines of friendship becoming blurred— he was chronically, hopelessly in love with his best friend, and it was deeply woven into the fabric of their entire relationship. There was no untangling that mess without severing it completely, and that has never even been an option.
Because losing Hinata would be like losing volleyball: the only thing that could ever cause him to despair.
After three years of being glued to each other’s sides, it finally comes time for Kageyama and Hinata to part ways— but life has a way of bringing them back together again and again.
—
This fic is a slowish burn, getting together, canonverse story that explores kagehina's changing relationship and their complicated feelings about growing up, volleyball, and each other.

Summary
Akaashi froze, chopsticks hovering midair. His heartbeat stumbled. Oh no.
The realization didn’t creep in. It slammed. No dramatic music. No epiphany. Just one clean, catastrophic truth dropping into his brain like a brick: I am in love with him. He glanced sideways. Bokuto was laughing again, bright and unbothered. His energy filled the air like sunlight: loud, impossible to ignore, a little too much, but warm in ways Akaashi could never admit.
Akaashi cleared his throat, focusing on his miso soup with the intensity of a monk contemplating enlightenment. It’s fine, he told himself. You’ll move past it. You’ll compartmentalize, repress, and die peacefully at age 87 having never mentioned it to anyone.
But then Bokuto nudged his elbow. “Akaashi, you didn’t laugh at my joke. You okay?”
Akaashi turned, and the sight of Bokuto smiling, made his stomach swoop traitorously. He forced his expression neutral, voice steady. “I was… conserving my energy for practice.”
Bokuto blinked, then laughed, easy and bright again. “You’re so serious all the time!”
Akaashi smiled back, betraying nothing. Inside, he was unraveling at a molecular level.

Summary
“It’s okay, Bokuto-san,” he’d reassured him time and time again, hiding beneath the covers lest he be caught on the phone so late into the night. Curled up on his side, talking to the star he’d selfishly let himself follow. “We’ll make it work.”
The words had been hollow; ash on his tongue from a flame he’d left ignited for far too long. He’s managed to withstand the burn thus far — and yet, as he watches the water from the tap seep between his fingers, he knows, deep down, that today might be the day he finds himself choking on the smoke.
(Or: Fukurōdani's third years are graduating, and Akaashi learns he isn't as good at goodbyes as he once considered himself to be.)

Summary
There’s a bit of rustling on the other side. Then a voice — a man, older, maybe in his forties or fifties — says, in a slightly accented voice, “Hello, is this Kageyama Tobio?”
Tobio goes still. He doesn’t know how he knows, but suddenly he’s fully certain of what this call is. Knowingly or not, he’s been waiting for it. Coach Ukai has been waiting for it. Fucking Kindaichi asked about it in passing during their last practice match at Seijoh. It’s not a surprise.
“Yes,” Tobio says, but it doesn’t come out. He clears his throat and tries again. “Yes, this — this is him.”
“Good, good,” the voice on the phone says. “This is Hibarida Fuki, Head Coach of the Japan Men’s National Volleyball Team.”
In which Kageyama Tobio receives an offer, swallows a heart, and fails to not look for Hinata in everything, everything.

Summary
Bokuto turned to see a frazzled Akaashi, still adorable even in slightly rumpled work clothes, standing incredulously in the doorway. He looked out of breath. Did he run here, Bokuto briefly thought?
Akaashi looked at Bokuto. Bokuto looked at Akaashi. Neither said anything for a few seconds.
“Oh, fuck-”
Akaashi immediately started sobbing.

It's not easy to surprise Akaashi Keiji, but Bokuto is sure as hell going to try.

Summary
Now Tooru looks at the pothos, how it cascades like a waterfall and curls around the windowframe; how it takes up a larger space in Tooru’s lived-in apartment than anything else ever has. He wonders what Iwaizumi would think of it all: the new pot he’d bought after it had outgrown the one on his windowsill, the little hooks he’d put up to keep its longer stems in place. The endless yield of love and the extent of its longing.
Still, he lets it continue to grow.
Or: How love, too, is something you make bloom.

Summary
Today is June 9th, 2013, and it’s noon, which means it is midnight in Japan, June 10th. Iwaizumi’s birthday. One month and ten days before Oikawa’s. Summer babies in a rain-soaked Japan, the both of them, that’s how their mothers retell the stories. Oikawa’s mother especially loves to recount that particular summer, that particular version of Oikawa, new and small and reaching. Oikawa can’t recall a rainy summer, a rainy birthday, without Iwaizumi. He can’t remember handling the heft of a locker room without that familiar hand on his back keeping him steady, either.
