But now, the Calamity's return is coming, and Giyuu is the only one keeping them unprepared.

Sanemi has to face it. For all he knows, Giyuu could be dead, could’ve been dead the moment the monster struck him, and Sanemi wouldn’t even know it. He’ll never know it, either, because he can’t use magic to sense if Giyuu’s okay, he can’t physically move to him, and he’s going to die here without holding Giyuu again or knowing what happened to the rest of their friends.
The rumbling in the distance reaches the arena, and as the ground shakes, Sanemi closes his eyes, hoping that Giyuu knows how much he’s always loved him, even though they couldn’t reach each other at the end of all things.

Normally it’s a week, maybe two, depending on the severity of the situation, but to be gone a whole month? That’s too much, even for him. As it is, he won’t quit his job, it pays good money. It’s given him a good place to live, it’s given him some really great friends.
More than that though, and the most important thing if he’s being honest, it’s given him the love of his life; Kim Namjoon.

Sanemi turned fully to look at him, eyes intense and angry, their faces inches apart as Sanemi gripped the edge of Giyuu’s uniform.

“This isn’t going to work if you’re going to have an attitude all day, y’know. Are you even listening? I need to know you’ve got my back. If you get me killed, I’m going to be pissed.” He released Giyuu, who blinked at him in surprise.

“What would you like me to say?” He managed.

Sanemi scoffed. “I don’t know, you could start with a yes? No? Maybe?” He paused and gauged Giyuu’s non-reaction. “Or maybe a who’s Sabito?” Giyuu stared at him until Sanemi finally rolled his eyes and turned away. “Whatever. You can’t dodge the question forever.”

While sparring, Giyuu accidentally calls Sanemi by Sabito's name, and Sanemi won't let it go. Though he insists to himself it was a meaningless accident, while assigned to a mission together, memories Giyuu would rather forget stir to the surface, and he realizes the comparisons might go deeper than he thought.

“Fighting a Lower Moon alone? Are you out of your damn mind?”
Giyu flinches at the whisper-shout, his exhaustion making him slow to process the sudden intensity. “I’m a Hashira,” he murmurs, his tone even, though the words come out softer than he intends, “I can handle it.”
“Clearly not!” Sanemi snaps back, his voice rising slightly before he reins it in, casting a glance toward the door as if to make sure no one heard, “You almost died, Giyu! You should never have gone on this mission alone, especially after Rengoku just—”
Sanemi cuts himself off abruptly, his jaw clenching as he turns his head away. His hands curl into tight fists at his sides, the knuckles pale. The unfinished sentence lingers in the air, heavy and suffocating.

OR: Giyu is always reckless on missions, getting himself hurt and throwing himself into unnecessary danger. He never thinks much of it—it’s not like anyone would care much if he did die. Sanemi decides to show him just how wrong he is.
