Summary
The last thing Ray felt was the bullet entering his head. It was an odd feeling, not the same as when he got shot in the stomach. Getting shot in the stomach was weird, the feeling of metal in a place where it wasn’t supposed to be, his intestines feeling sensations not dissimilar to his fingers, sensations they were never supposed to feel. The feeling of touching metal so familiar, yet so in the wrong place. It reminded Ray of the time he stepped on a nail, pain of the flesh intertwined with the undeniable wrongness of this is not supposed to be here. No, getting shot in the head did not feel like getting shot in the guts.
Where Ray dies at the end of The Long Walk and wakes up in a hospital in the modern era.

Pete stared at the door, forcing himself not to change his mind about this. He hadn’t seen Ray in five years and now, standing in front of his apartment, he felt like a creep. Didn’t help that his intentions were purely selfish.
The muffled thumping of feet against wooden flooring drew closer and closer, closing the time slot of opportunity Pete had to turn around and sprint off. The keys rustled in the lock. The door swung open and there he stood, as handsome as the last time Pete had seen him.
“Hi- Pete?”
Pete desperately needs inspiration for his songwriting and decides that hearbreak makes best music - so he seeks out his college best friend, one he hadn't talk to, hoping to break his heart all over again. He finds something better instead.

Pete’s head spun as he tried to book the uber ride back to their apartment. Ray wouldn’t stop pestering him, grabbing at the phone, trying to snatch it out of his grip. He had to reach out his hand, trying to push Ray away by his chest, but Ray was a big guy, matching him in strength.
“C’mon Ray, let’s go home. You are drunk,” said Pete, but couldn’t hold his laughter back as he watched Ray’s face, his flushed cheeks. He was also quite drunk himself. “We gotta go before we are forced to spend the night here. You want that?”
Pete and Ray get drunk and fuck.

It's been two years since Pete and Ray began to live together and Pete's pretty sure Ray knows he's gay. It's not like he's been hiding it after all. But after Ray's reaction to seeing him with a guy, he's not so sure anymore.
Ray finds his best friend and long-time crush in an alleyway with a random guy and realizes that Pete liked men all this time, he just didn't like him. He doesn't take it well.
