    Summary

Grace is beautiful and brilliant and, inexplicably, always has a smile for him. He's an angel to Simon's dog and Simon will spend the rest of his life groveling at his feet.

    He doesn't mind.

[Or: Simon believes he needs to give Grace something in return for everything. Along the way, he falls in love, all while thinking Grace views their arrangement as something purely sexual.]

"Anomaly Simon very friendly toward 'little rocks' but frequently forgets Eridians fully sentient and capable medical professionals, statement."

Grace parses that. "He's not taking you seriously when you talk to him?"

"Keeps trying to hug nurses, statement. Upsetting. Upsetting."

    Summary

Rocky and Grace are back aboard the Hail Mary for the first-ever mission in the Star Angel Program launched by the Eridians to help save nearby star systems that are likley to support other intelligent life.

All is going well until their new-and-improved astral sensing technology picks up a strange radio signal from a nearby moon.

    OR

The moon itself was fairly large, clearly the largest in Epsilon Eridani b’s orbit, and the magnetosphere of the gas giant could potentially stabilize a body of water like that to some extent, but there would have to be an immense atmospheric pressure on the moon for an ocean, because that’s what it was, to exist.

Once in stable orbit, Grace was able to see the ocean itself through the hull cameras of the Hail Mary.

    “That’s very strange," He remarked.

“Not very. Look at mountain ridges. Moon mountains release gas. Enough atmospheric pressure for ocean,” countered Rocky.

“It’s not that,” began Grace, “It’s red.”

    Summary

“Don’t let the blood get into your ship, okay?”

    That made Grace pause. “What?!”

“If I die, you have to get my body out of here,” the man pleaded, but Grace had to go. His oxygen was out. The guy would be dead in six minutes. “You have to get me out, even if I’m dead. Hey!”

“Just hold on!” Grace propelled himself through zero gravity, away from the radio.

“Don’t leave me here-!” The roar echoed through the ship halls.

    ---

When Ryland Grace complained about being a little bored, maybe a little lonely, he thought a nostalgic trip around Erid would fix him right up. The last thing he expected was to find deadly space bacteria in deep space and a human. Alive.

    Summary

The worst part about it, Simon thinks, is that when his skin starts to slough off, it’s replaced by a film of blood. And when that starts, the line of demarcation that separates what was strictly him and strictly other starts to fade. Even when his left arm detaches with an uneven rip and the voice in his head stops being his voice, he still hopes there’s a way to distill his real self from the sludge.

Simon subscribes to the idea that people get what they deserve as a consequence of their actions. Something along the lines of karma. It brings a sense of closure, and he’ll take closure where he can get it. With that, Simon submits himself to the notion he’s getting exactly what he deserves. This is how it’s going to end - with him blindly slinging an axe in a battle for unsatisfying gulps of metallic air, fumbling around the dark for a line that used to exist.

But he wakes up. And the first thing Simon’s traitorous brain thinks is that this man has the kindest eyes he’s ever seen.
