Slughorn’s voice boomed, “Ten points to Slytherin for Mr. Snape’s perfect infusion!” and Sirius groaned, elbowing James. “Bet he’ll be insufferable for a week.”
James made a face, but the truth was, he couldn’t help watching Severus—how he frowned in concentration, how the fringe of his hair kept falling over his eyes.
When their own potion went sideways (Sirius had misread the instructions and dumped the valerian in too soon), smoke filled the air and Slughorn hurried over, his mustache twitching. “Oh dear, gentlemen—perhaps you should observe Mr. Snape’s technique!”
The class laughed, but Severus didn’t. He just glanced at James, his dark eyes unreadable, and for a moment, something flickered between them—something sharp, and electric, and impossible to name.

Methods: Observation and AnalysisPast Findings: Severus Snape is intelligent, cold, easily irritated, and sharp-tongued. He finds humor only in insults, others’ failure, and Remus Lupin. Doesn’t smile but smirks. Eyes do not reveal true emotion or intention. Subject will never speak to Sirius Black again.
Observation 1: The subject appears to be good to and for Remus. Subject listens to long explanations and does not interrupt.
Note: The subject interrupts every other student... especially when he finds the student to be an imbecile.
Conclusion: Subject respects Remus.
Addendum: Subject still does not smile with Remus.

Summary
Sabo took what felt like the hundredth deep breath of the day, and finally jumped off of his already tied up boat onto the railing of one of the most infamous pirate ships around.
Someone screeched, and he saw a man —Vista? He was pretty sure that was his name— trip over his own two feet and faceplant in, apparently, pure surprise. It was kind of valid, despite having thought about his entrance for over two hours, Sabo hadn’t really chosen the best option. But in his defense, he wasn’t sure there was a best option, or even a good one for that matter.
“Ah… hello,” very smooth, “I’m not here to pick a fight,” a great continuation, truly. Koala would have hit him so damn hard if she had heard.

.The war went a little different. The papers did not report it all that differently though, and Sabo is determined to figure it out.

Murmurs stirred again, sharper now.“Survivor?” he echoed, as though tasting the word. He laughed softly. “How vulgar.”
The attendant continued, “He was found clinging to the dock.”
Jalmack’s gaze lingered on the kid, taking in the burns, the slack posture, the way he didn’t even stir. Something like approval crept into his tone.
Jalmack watched, pleased. “Yes. This one will do.”
No one asked what for.
Or: Sabo thought running away would be better than his current life. Instead he is enslaved and forced to fight in monthly tournaments until he can escape. Becoming a revolutionary hero is a lot more fun though.

“You’re not someone? You’re not a person?” Fabian’s mouth returns to its fly-catching position, wide and gaping. “What does that mean?”
“I’m just yours.” The knight shrugs again. Fabian ignores the way that his words clench around his heart with an uncomfortable, unwelcome pressure. “I just serve.”
