For so long now, the name Hugh felt like a punishment. As he was reclaimed to the cube, Hugh believed he could hold onto who he became, even as the green haze overtook his vision and Geordi slipped away. He hadn’t meant for Hugh to make the others suffer.
He hadn’t meant for Hugh to lead to Geordi’s hurt.
“May I…” Then he steels himself, looks up at the captain of the Enterprise with as much certainty he can muster. “I would like to see Geordi.”

She failed again.
She always had biology chops from her days in the garden, back when it was alive. Macro, but biology nonetheless. She could trace the veins of the smallest field mouse. She could determine the difference between every extant rosefinch. She could tell you the taxonomic distinction between D. sanguinalis and D. ischaemum. But humanity has abandoned the biosphere for longer than she can recall and it would be better to use her ken to care for man.
Chemistry. That’s where it all goes wrong every time she sits for her entry exam. She can observe an organism. She can never comprehend what happens inside of it.

Jill thinks about turning back instead, dumping him on Chris, saying, "I lied, I can't do this. I can't be near him without wanting to do something horrible to myself and him."
But then what? Chris would give her that pitying look. He'd throw the copy at someone with a life, someone who shouldn't have to deal with this for six months, and then they'd probably commit her again.
So instead of entertaining the idea of going back, she keeps thinking about killing him. She catches sight of him again in the rear-view mirror again by accident, and catches pale, nearly colorless blue eyes staring back at her.
