Besides, his internal process of elimination says that Teruko is most likely familiar with more than she lets on about the state of hopelessness.

When they express affection for you, they will express affection for the pelt that you’ve stitched around the jagged edges of your own self, not the thing that lurks inside.
Eventually, you may come to think that good people are those for whom goodness is its own reward, as opposed to simply those who do good.
Eventually, you may grow bored of existing.
