All in all, what Cole was really trying to say was that he barely remembered what the guy looked like, let alone connect his face to the notes he dreaded to see in his dreams every day. He could imitate Jason's writing from memory alone, but imagining Jason's hands writing those notes? Beyond challenging.
Moral of the story: Cole didn't know how to react in this prickly, slightly awkward situation.
