Jon accese il registratore che subito iniziò a ronzare nella sua mano, Martin provò un certo disappunto, poi guardò il viso del fidanzato cadere a picco nel terrore, ma prima che potesse dire qualsiasi cosa il dito di Jon premette il bottone.

Questa volta quando fu acceso, Martin non era in casa, ma ascoltando la registrazione era sicuro di ricordare il giorno, quando un temporale lo aveva colto all'improvviso di ritorno dal villaggio, Jon stava ascoltando la pioggia, poteva sentire il suono distorto uscire ticchettando dalla cassetta prima che venisse spenta di nuovo.

La registrazione era corrotta dal vento, dalle cuffie che Martin stava usando per ascoltare sentì i suoni di una voce lontana, poi i passi sulle tegole di legno della veranda della loro casa, il passo leggermente zoppicante di Jon, non se ne lamentava mai, ma Martin vedeva i giorni in cui gli faceva più male quella ferita.
"Martin? Mi hai chiamato?" la voce di Jon suonava lontana, poteva cogliere vuoti tra le parole quando il vento era troppo forte. Non sentì la risposta che doveva avergli dato, solo la risposta del compagno "Okay, arrivo." Sentì i passi tornare, lui chinarsi e spegnere il registratore. -

Emma era bella, i riflessi del fuoco tra i capelli rossi, gli occhi sembrano carboni contro la luce tremolante del camino. La lingua era leggermente fuori, morsa dal taglio bianco dei denti, sul lato della bocca, mentre le sue dita erano attente al suo lavoro. Sentii Ray ridere e abbassai lo sguardo a osservarlo, mentre indicava Emma.
-Hai il pennarello in faccia.
Anche Dominic rise, subito sostenuto dal tono insolente di Yvette. -Emma è proprio imbranata.
Lei fu presa alla sprovvista, riportata nel mondo troppo in fretta, alzò gli occhi confusi. -Cosa? Che c'è?
La risata di Ray si spense ad un certo punto, gli occhi semichiusi, a gettare lunghe ombre sulle guance con le ciglia. -È bella anche così.
Fu appena un sussurro, ma mi godetti quel piccolo attimo di vulnerabilità, non era sempre lì la persona che Ray nascondeva dentro di sé, che legava in una gabbia e che non lasciava mai uscire del tutto. (cap1)Per chi non conoscesse l'altra storia che ho scritto non è fondamentale leggerla per capire questa, anche se è consigliabile se si vuole avere un'idea generale.

"La giornata al Villaggio inizia alle sei in punto con gli orologi di tutti gli chalet che risuonano per le pareti in legno e i camini a sbuffare fuori fumo, anche in primavera. Chris non ha perso l'abitudine di gridare l'orario di sveglia, correndo in giro e dimenticando di mettersi i vestiti pesanti passando da struttura a struttura, collezionando così sgridate e raffreddori. Usciamo per fare colazione già vestiti, Ray ci mette sempre un po' di più ad alzarsi dal letto, conto i minuti per capire che tipo di giornata sarà oggi. Gli ci è voluto un quarto d'ora. La media è di otto minuti." (capitolo 2)
Emma, Ray e Norman hanno ricostruito una nuova realtà insieme alla loro famiglia, in un piccolo idilliaco sperduto luogo tra le montagne. Emma non ha nessuna memoria della sua vecchia vita, ma i suoi ricordi vivono di quelli dei suoi compagni. Tra le montagne, in normali giornate, alle prese con una vita normale in un mondo dove sono al sicuro, molti ancora riportano nella mente ferite di un passato che non riescono a dimenticare. Forse la perdita di ricordi sarebbe quasi una benedizione.

Summary

Zuko has been taken by the Earth Kingdom army to who-knows-where, and Sokka is determined to get him back.
But he can’t do it alone.
With Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors by his side, Sokka is headed to Ba Sing Se to find Katara and Aang so they can go rescue his fire bender.
Things aren’t as easy as he had hoped. Corruption, lies, and unknown horrors await them inside the city’s walls. None of this is helping Sokka’s mental well-being.
Hakoda and his men face a problem of their own as Azula approaches with the intentions of making it rain fire.

Summary
Book one ends with two major diffrences: 1. Sokka went on the mission with Hahn (it did not go well) 2. Zhao survives the North Pole and that proves unfortunate for everybody (except Zhao, obviously)
Imprisoned on Zhao’s war ship, Sokka and Zuko have to work together to survive. They are not very enthusiastic about this prospect.
And they argue.
