I'd been thinking about writing an AU version of Oliver Twist for some time in which he comes of age and is driven headfirst into the dark underworld that is late Regency, early Victorian prostitution, and his eventual downfall. This chapter is a trial work for a much bigger project which I am slowly planning, one in which Oliver is inducted into prostitution by the manipulative and controlling pimping duo of Fagin and Sikes, with other characters appearing, too. It is intended to be a dark tragedy, with little true romance to it. Oliver will experience heartbreak, as will other characters; I'll see where the writing takes me. In the meantime, here is the trial chapter, set shortly after Oliver's first night in London, staying at the public house-cum-brothel, 'The Clever Dogs.' (Edited in-line with a suggestion in the comments - thank you for that guidance!)
