Something roused Ed in the pitch darkness, and his eyes snapped open, any exhaustion he might have felt disappearing in an instant. He slipped out of Stede's unconscious embrace and moved on instinct, something he didn't quite understand pulling him out to the front porch. And there he saw it, down by the shore—a small figure in black, looking out over the waves. A part of him knew who it was already, even before he had moved close enough to see the wooden leg.
