Summary
Five years after the world was ravaged by a zombie outbreak, what remains of humanity has learned how to survive in their new apocalypse. “Guess it’s your job to make sure it doesn’t,” Robby replies. Despite the verbal blows Jack just aimed right into his ribs, he still feels bad for the way Jack’s face drains of color once he’s said it. “Jack—”
“Go lay down before it starts,” Jack instructs him, and Robby recognizes Dr. Abbot taking over in more ways than one. “I’ll come check on you in an hour, alright?”
For one more heartbeat, Jack doesn’t move. Again, Robby feels the pang down the center of his chest into his stomach that simultaneously tells him to kiss him and reminds him that he can’t.

He repeats it a few times, scratches his neck, slaps himself again, and then falls into his bed. He groans at the way it bothers his bruised ribs, but he lays there in the pain, letting it cleanse him from his thoughts earlier.
Here, in the haze of his pain, he is whole, normal, pure. He is repenting, paying his dues, accepting his punishment. He doesn’t need his pa for that, he can do it himself, make sure he’s not some dirty gay.
Gary hasn’t believed in God in a very long time; in fact, he’s certain there isn’t one. But there has to be some truths in the world, and this has to be one of them.

Summary
McVries tells him about meeting Ray when he’d only just meant to be passing through Freeport. He casually asks Stebbins if he believes in soulmates while he’s elbow-deep in the ceiling, and when Stebbins freezes stock still on the ladder, he only laughs that easy laugh of his and keeps on describing their meet-cute like he wasn’t really expecting an answer anyway. It’s a sweet story. Romantic, at least in the way McVries tells it.
It’s the kind of story that twists Stebbins up in places he didn’t even realize could get knots until his smile looks like it hurts. It was love at first sight. McVries doesn’t ask if he believes in that, too, and Stebbins is grateful that he doesn’t have to stutter out an answer that he’s not entirely sure he knows.

So foolish that McVries almost laughed, something bitter and disbelieving catching in his throat, but he'd been too close to tears to really get it out—or maybe he was already crying when he said it, maybe he was bawling his eyes out and struggling against soldiers, but he can't make heads or tails of those last moments before Garraty was rushed off. He just knew he had said it, had wished for his life, because he'd never been more sure of what he'd wanted before.
Save Ray Garraty, he'd said, or screamed, or cried—and they had to.
Saving Ray Garraty had been the easy part—was the easy part, would always be the easy part—it was what came after that was hard.

A big, broad-shouldered man came through the door, the look of a long-haul trucker hanging around him like a ratty coat. He was wearing old oil-stained jeans and a frayed flannel shirt thrown over a white t-shirt, his scuffed boots peeling up at the toes with age.
He had the air of a man who’d reached the end of his rope. He had a battered wide-brimmed hat pulled low to cover his long, frazzled hair, half of which was scraped back into a loose tail. He had dark hair and dark skin and dark eyes that were framed by the deep-set bruises Arthur only ever saw on long-haulers and cattlemen, the marks of too many nights at the wheel or in the saddle, the normal rhythms of life stretched out and pulling at the seams.
The feller was handsome. Arthur noticed that as an afterthought, his breath catching in his chest. Under the bruises and the loose strands of hair, the feller was handsome. His eyes were bright and keen.
“Uh,” said Arthur, caught flat-footed by the unanticipated surge of attraction tightening his belly. “Hi.”
The feller looked Arthur dead in the eye. “I need all of the caramel sauce that you have,” he said.
