So they stand next to her, and lay pillows on her bed, and retreat into solemn, dark corners, and never, ever talk to her.
But Polly hasn’t worried about being holy enough or righteous enough or worthy enough for anybody since her mother died. And anyway, she’s the only one who knows how Waz takes her tea.
So she makes the tea, and she goes.

Yuri sighs, banging the back of his head against the island wall. “Ugh, but still. I'm already dried up. Everyone left for shitty husbands and wives and kids.”
Otabek shifts his eyes lazily to Yuri. “Where did I go, exactly?”
Yuri squints, flicking at a ball of lint by his foot. “Nowhere, I guess.”

Yet the grin Red Jack shot up at him bore no trace of hostility. Only a kind of open invitation. A dare. A calculation, perhaps, that the best way to draw Samothes out from behind his veil of reticence was by provoking him.
Something familiar, in that. An echo. The flash of a smile, sharp enough to draw blood, the strange relief of being mocked, laughed at by that playful, predatory being —
Samothes hesitated only a few moments more. Then he stripped to the waist, casting his robe to one side against the sandy soil of the beach, and strode down to the pier to set to work.

The Dr. Geiszler Hermann had found in the publications — printed pages worn with constant handling and tucked into his briefcase for easy access — was an eloquent scientist whose work functioned at a level far above almost anyone else Hermann had ever encountered in the field, and yet he neither patronized his readers nor expressed himself in the inexplicable jargon which so infected much academic work. He was singular in his intelligence. Hermann thought this was a man he could understand — and who could understand him in turn.

Summary
There was a period of time both after and before the Lighthouse Bar. That is to say, after Buddy was dragged kicking and screaming from the Lighthouse's observation deck while her brain slowly turned to soup, and before she and Jet returned to the Cerberus Province for the grand reopening.
This period of time, after Buddy and Jet's respective lowest points and before their lives begin to truly turn around for the better, is easily disregarded. They were self-styled nobodies, living nowhere, in the middle of a long and tedious and meandering process. This process could be called "healing" or perhaps "recovery", although both are rather too good at implying a smooth upward curve, a constant moving forward, a steady march of progress. One of these days Buddy will find the right word to describe it. She always does eventually.
