Summary
Erling's palms itched the whole match, it felt like. Hard not to when his body remembers what it meant when Jude used to score for Dortmund, every silly bet they'd made over stat lines. Aside from that, the only things that penetrated the oppressive humidity of July in Miami were the spikes of adrenaline as the tides of the match shifted and the sickening wrongness when Erling pulled something ten minutes into the second half.

Bookmarker's Notes
Erling's palms skate up beneath Jude's layers to press against the warmth of his bare skin, and it's like he can feel Jude's heart beating everywhere he touches, along his bony shoulderblades and the bellows of his ribcage. They don't see each other nearly as often as they used to — just the nature of being in different clubs, different leagues — but their bodies still speak the same language. That kind of knowledge never really goes away, no matter how long it's been.

"Jude," Erling says, tone contemplative.
"No," Jude replies preemptively, even as his cock jerks between them.
Erling laughs, his eyes crinkling with it, and fucks into him once, harder, making Jude gasp and grab at the sheets. "You don't even know what I was going to say."
"Yes I do." Jude's voice comes out wrecked, and they've barely started. Embarrassing. "You're gonna make me say things."

"I miss you," Erling says, lower, quieter. "All the time. Is that what you want to hear?"
Jude nods, shaky, and Erling kisses him, and Jude’s back arches. Erling groans into his mouth, pace picking up, and Jude wraps around him, arms, legs, everything, pulling him impossibly closer, needing the weight, the pressure, feeling like he needs to be pinned under him or else he might fly apart.
"I miss you too," Jude pants against his lips, barely a whisper, "I miss you so fucking much, you have no idea–"

Summary
An impressive bruise blooms on the side of Buck’s pale neck. A few more cluster further down to his collarbone on both sides. Though hidden, his thighs present an impressive tapestry too. The taste of sex and sweat lingers like a sweet memory.
Eddie leans against the door frame, head resting on the wood. When Buck snaps his wide-eyed attention toward him, finally sensing his presence, Eddie starts to grin. Too many quips build at the back of his throat; he opens his mouth.
Only for Maddie to pop up from behind the refrigerator door with a shocked, “E-Eddie?”
(or Maddie probably, definitely regrets not calling Buck first before stopping by)

Summary
There's a part of Eddie that's tempted to do something insane, something that'll absolutely fuck up this Eddie's day, if he's a real person with a real life that Eddie is just borrowing for the time being, and not an elaborate figment of his own subconscious. Something like hopping on a plane to Los Angeles, tracking down whatever version of Buck lives there now, seeing what happens.
He wants to know if Buck would smile at him again, without the weight of history between them. If maybe, in a different world, he'd want Eddie.
Or: in the aftermath of a deadly car accident, Eddie finds himself able to visit other lives he could have lived: other worlds, other possibilities, and maybe - just maybe - a chance to get things right.

"So," Pepa says without missing a beat, her crow's feet sinking their talons into the delicate skin around her eyes as she smiles beatifically at him. "You love him. What are you going to do about it?"
Eddie's brakes come to a screeching halt again, proverbial smoke coming out of his ears. "I…hadn't got that far."
Right. "I mean, uh, tell him…eventually?" Eddie guesses when Pepa doesn't respond to him and instead stares at him like he's just started speaking Pig Latin.
"Ay," Pepa says in an exasperated little huff. "We used to have romance."
Pepa teaches Eddie how to woo Buck. Buck doesn't quite get the picture.

“LA Dispatch to Engine 118, be advised–”
Eddie’s head snaps up.
Maddie. Dispatch cadence – clean, clipped, controlled.
Chimney’s eyes flick to the radio, then to Eddie, before he answers.
“118, go ahead.”
Maddie continues, steady as a metronome.
“We have a reported MVC on the Fletcher Drive Bridge, repeat: multiple-vehicle collision. Units en route have visual confirmation of two cars at the scene.”
Eddie’s pulse stutters. He leans forward without meaning to, the seatbelt tugging tight across his chest.
Maddie keeps going, all professionalism, no tremor, until she hits the words that break.
“One of the vehicles is… a Jeep that went over the railing into the water.”

“I gotta be dreaming.”
Buck pinches him. Hard.
“Jesus Christ, Buck.”
“See? Not dreaming.”
Eddie sends him an irritated, wary look, but Buck is getting kind of amped up, so he starts pacing around with his hands on his head.
“Okay, we’re—we’re stuck in a fucking time loop. Both of us. Um, what if it’s like. What’s that movie called? Groundhog Day! Where we have to learn to be better people. Or like a fucking. Uh. A Christmas Carol.”
“A Christmas Carol isn’t about a time loop,” Eddie adds unhelpfully.
“Okay, b-but some fantastical shit happens and they have to be better.” Buck gasps. “Oh my God, Eddie. What if we’re terrible people?”
Buck and Eddie start living the same day over and over again.

“There is no risk,” Eddie says, and he sounds so sure of himself that Buck can’t help but believe in him. “Be sure. It’s you and me.”
Be sure. Kissing Eddie doesn't feel like destiny; it feels more scientific, some gravitational force making the choice for him. There’s no conscious effort. They just crash together, a stellar collision, a collapsing.

“Why are you being so calm about this,” demands Buck, entirely too loudly, and Eddie tips his head at him, something fond and— and appreciative in his eyes.
“Because it’s you,” he says, like it’s simple. “Buck. When have I ever not been sure of you?”
.
.“Maddie said it doesn’t always feel like this. Does it usually feel like this?”
Eddie shakes his head, his sweaty hair dragging over Buck’s cheek. “Never,” he says. “Never felt about anyone, the way I do about you.”

Eddie counts his breaths, watches as several emotions pass through Buck’s features, none lingering long enough for Eddie to categorize, but it doesn’t matter. Between his ninth and tenth breath, Buck’s hands cup his face and he drags him into a bruising kiss.
.
.“I love you,” Eddie repeats more quietly, cognizant that their waitress is restocking salt shakers a few tables down, probably using them to juice up her gossip stores for the week. “And this—it’s important.”
Buck squeezes his hand, smiling like Eddie just handed him the moon. “Yeah, it is. And I got your back. Always.”

His thumb brushes over his birthmark again, making Buck shiver. “You’d been asleep for days, still on the machines. I’d been in that room for hours, just watching you. The doctors—I was starting to think I’d never see you open your eyes again, and I’d always wanted to do this.” His lips brush over his eye, and Buck’s throat goes tight. Buck opens his eyes when Eddie pulls away, and it feels like seeing him for the first time again somehow. “So I did. Just once.”

“Ravi, I want you to have my fours,” says Buck, before Ravi can start his own turn. All three heads at the table turn to him in incredulous unison, so he adds, “What?”
“That is simply not how the game works,” answers Ravi, dumbfounded. “How do you—are you real?”
“Don’t open that can of worms,” Eddie teases with a shake of his head. “I’m still trying to work that one out, and I was roommates with the guy.”
Barely audible, Hen mutters, “Roommates, he says. Is that what historians will call it?”

Why did Buck secretly work-propose to his work partner? Some boxes are destined to remain shut. If he were to take a peek, the contents would probably include committing to an inside joke with—only himself, for recreational purposes, apparently; catalyzed tenfold by the dizzying brain fog that comes along with any diversion of Eddie’s time and attention away from Buck himself, so, all in all… he got a bit turned around.
.
.Buck, if he’d let himself wander down that alley of thought, might have envisioned his first kiss with Eddie being a slow drip, gradual; a bit like falling asleep in a soft bed and warm arms after a long day. Instead, it feels like tumbling rapidly out of a dream - the kind you forget in milliseconds, because everything prior to waking up doesn’t matter anymore. Doesn’t compare.

Summary
There’s a long pause before Buck answers. “Yeah, I do,” he says. “I felt alone for the first twenty something years of my life.”
“What about now?” Eddie asks, and he’s not even quite sure what he means. What about now, right in this moment? or what about now, now that I’m gone?
Buck chooses to answer the former. “I’m never lonely when I’m with you,” he says simply, softly.
Eddie, Buck, and six phone calls.

Bookmarker's Notes
Buck is here for him. Of course he is. Eddie’s heart hurts, because he realizes it’s been years since he’s ever had to doubt that. That’s the thing about Buck—he burrows his way in, and then he’s just there, such a constant present in Eddie’s life that he can almost convince himself it’s normal. But it’s not normal, the way Buck cares, the way he gives, and Eddie is suddenly struck with the magnitude of it. Of how much he’s gained since meeting Buck. Eddie always thought about falling in love as if it were a painful thing, a rabid animal that crawls out of his chest and leaves a gaping wound there. He thought he didn’t want to do it again, because it hurt, and it was messy, and it would leave his hands mangled and stained with red.
But falling in love with Buck—whenever it happened—wasn’t like that. He doesn’t recall it ever hurting, doesn’t remember every slamming into the ground. Maybe that’s because he hadn’t fallen at all. Maybe he had just woken up inside of it, and it was everywhere, and it was home.

Maddie’s eyebrows rise, and she looks past Buck to Eddie, the corners of her mouth curling upwards. “My kisses don’t work on Uncle Eddie,” she says, and if she thinks Buck misses the way she says it—Uncle Eddie—she’s sorely mistaken. He knows exactly what she’s doing.
And he realizes too late that that means he should probably be afraid.
Jee gasps, eyes going wide. “What?” She asks breathlessly. “Then how will his ouchies get better?”
Maddie hums thoughtfully—performatively—before her eyes slowly slide over to Buck. He starts to shake his head, unsure exactly what she’s about to do but deeply aware that he’s not going to like it. “I have heard,” she says, leaning into her like she has a secret, “That best friend kisses are just as good as mommy kisses.” She tosses her hair over her shoulder and looks at Chimney. “And almost as strong as daddy kisses, too.”

Summary
"It's fine, Jee," Eddie says. "Buck doesn't have to kiss me."
"Yes he does." Jee crosses her arms and looks sternly at Buck. "Daddy and Mommy kiss every time when they go away from each other."
"Yeah, okay." Buck sucks in a breath and steps towards Eddie. He ducks his head down and presses the most fleeting kiss to Eddie's cheek.
"Not like that," Jee scolds.
"What? Why not?" Buck squawks.
"Because," she sighs and gives him a long, disapproving look. "Mommy and Daddy always kiss on the lips."
