What did he think was going to happen?
Of course Ilya wasn't going to choose him.
And now, he stood in their kitchen like a stranger, having to pretend be okay with the fact that Ilya went out and hooked up with Svetlana on a night meant to celebrate hockey's greatest. A party he wasn't even invited to as a captain himself.
What a fucking joke.
He spent the entire day coming up with meticulous loopholes and justifications for something that was actually quite simple—nobody remembered. Shane was wholeheartedly forgotten and he was too proud, or maybe dense, to figure it out himself.
Or, the one where Ilya forgets Shane’s birthday. Coping ensues.

Of a naked Omega.
He was, objectively, handsome; you probably had to be, to get a photoshoot with what Shane was quickly realizing was a glorified skin mag. But the thing that caught Shane’s attention was the dark marks that littered the Omega’s skin.
Shane swallowed hard, unreasonably affected by the image.
He didn’t want the Omega.
But he could see the appeal of being him.

“Nah, Shane would be a terrible Traitor,” Ilya said. Ilya took hold of Shane’s face, squishing his cheeks and making his lips puff out like a fish. “Everyone look at this face. You really think he can lie?” Ilya yanked Shane’s face closer to him, making Shane stumble. Some of his ginger ale sloshed out of the can. “You think he can lie to me? Please.”
Shane rubbed his cheeks with a frown once his husband released him. “Thanks, I guess.”
OR: Shane and Ilya go on the very first MLH edition of The Traitors and chaos ensues.

Summary
Shane Hollander is the sole Omega within the NHL. He’s been running from his own instincts since the moment he first presented and lives his life akin to that of a Beta; scentless, never nesting, and without a heat cycle. Any failure to conform to these ideals would result in being outcast from his peers and by the league altogether.
Ilya is the only Alpha in ice hockey that plays without the use of suppressants. He lives his life purely driven by instinct, running from the ghosts of those attempting to control him. Unbeknownst to Shane, he’s also the only person that can smell the Omega, and the scent is steadily driving the Alpha insane.
