Whenever I found myself a little too tight in my jeans, I'd imagine him without his prosthetic on. I'd dig scars deep into his skin like splits in rocks. Spit boils of pus over his cheeks that threatened to pop and ooze with blood. Imagined his mouth devoid of teeth with only darkened gums left. Some days his nose would be two holes in his face, on others his eyes fell out their sockets.
It didn't help.Or, Travis knows two things for sure: God sees everything, and he has a fixation with Sal Fisher he won't name. Sal won’t leave his mind no matter how many times he tries to exorcise him. Usually with a spit-slick fist.

Hell, he’d never even left his father’s house. He graduated high school just barely above average and hadn’t even gotten his degree like he wanted to. Travis bent again to his father’s will and agreed to become a preacher and take over the church after his retirement. Kenneth Phelps died before that could happen, much to Travis’ unwelcome relief. He never wanted anything to do with that fucking church about halfway through high school; or the people in it, for that matter.
