The thing about it is that, while some people grow into themselves, Kakashi is the sort of person who grew out of himself. He wasn't ever very good at being a child. Gai hadn't noticed it when he was a child himself, but now that he's got a teenage version of his rival on hand to compare with, he's starting to come to some belated realizations. It shouldn't be surprising; who really gets to be a child in a ninja village? But Kakashi was definitely worse at it than most.
He'd feel sympathetic, except for how the cocky little bastard keeps inexplicably hitting on him.

Honeypot is a term for an operational practice involving the use of a covert agent to create a sexual relationship to compromise a target. The operator may be a government spy and the target can unwittingly provide intelligence.
Kakashi was barely nine before his first assignment to a mission of this kind. He never thought about these missions. He thought instead about all the death he had witnessed, and the absence of love in his life, and the damage he inflicted on the innocents around him. The work he was assigned to outside of his team didn’t affect him. He really only remembered these missions during his nightmares. Or during close contact. Or while teaching his students. But he didn't ever think of them.
Gai knows when something is off with Kakashi. He’d never let Kakashi know that he knows something is wrong, but he still lets Kakashi know that it doesn’t change the way he feels, in his own way. Eternal Rival means forever. It means through thick and thin. It means being there even when you are not wanted. A promise for forever should not be taken lightly.

It had been four days since Kakashi was involuntarily checked into Konoha’s psych ward. It had been fourteen days since he was involuntary checked into Konoha’s Hospital. He knows this because every morning, the nurses announce the date. Without this, Kakashi would not have been able to articulate how long he’d been there.
Gai is his only visitor. He comes every day. Kakashi imagined the council kept the whole thing quiet and not many people knew the reality of the situation. Maybe they told the village he was attending some important political conference. Or that he had fallen ill. They probably only told immediate family the truth. Except he has no immediate family.
He has Gai though. He's always wanted to have Gai.
