Daydreams and sleepless nights

Summary:

Months after the defeat of Belos, there’s a portal between the Human and Demon Realms, and everything seems perfect. Keyword: seems.

Luz struggles to sleep at night, due to the lucid nightmares that plague her, and none other than her awesome girlfriend, Amity Blight, is there to help her through it all.

And of course, it’s ridiculously fluffy.

Notes:

Okay I know I said that these would be weekly… but I couldn’t wait to post this one. I loved writing it, and I hope that you love reading it. Enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Amity P.O.V.

Sitting on the little dock, staring out at the boiling water that could burn off all my skin in an instant, I couldn’t help but feel at peace. Not because of the waves screaming—almost literally—against the burning—literally this time—sand, but because of the person curled up into my side.

With a blanket underneath us, a basket filled with human delicacies to our side, and some wonderfully sour, yet sweet drink named, “lemon-aid?” chilled in some ice, the date couldn’t have been more perfect.

I hummed contentedly, gaining the attention of the human cuddled up next to me.

“You seem happy,” Luz observed, her grin showing in her tone of voice.

“How do you expect me not to be?” I started running my hand through the chocolate hair of the girl at my side, loving the way she sighed and leaned into my touch. “I mean, Belos is gone, the portal’s open… you’re still here with me…” My voice trailed off for a moment. “Life seems pretty great.”

“And someone’s turning fifteeeeen sooonnnn~!” Luz sang out, bopping my nose.

“Ugh, don’t remind me,” I groaned.

“What’s with the lack of enthusiasm? Fifteen is a milestone!” Luz exclaimed, sitting up to see my face better. “And we’ll be the same age again!”

Luz’s birthday had been a few months prior, and she didn’t miss a chance to rub in the fact that she was older than me.

I only shrugged in response to her enthusiasm, looking down at my hands while fiddling with the hem of my shirt.

“Hey, are you okay?” Luz lowered her head to meet my gaze. All I could supply was a nod, and that did not satisfy the human. “I can tell when something is bothering you. Spill.”

I exhaled aggressively, ruffling the tufts of hair that hung over Luz’s face. “It’s just… weird now,”

“Weird?” She tilted her head in the most adorable way, forcing a small smile out of me.

“Well, with my parents gone because of the whole siding with Belos thing, everything’s different,” I raised my shoulders, throwing out my hands in some sort of expression to accentuate my point. “Ed and Em have been great, don’t get me wrong. It’s just…” I took another deep breath, pausing for a moment to form the correct words.

“I get it,” Luz took one of my hands in hers, giving it an affectionate squeeze. “You’re used to them being there, even if you didn’t like them there.”

“It’s not like they celebrated my birthday anyways,” I shrunk, recalling all the years where I only received a pat on the shoulder, the occasional awkward hug thrown in for special milestones. “The most I got one year was a bit more allowance, but I guess I’m just getting used to their absence, even though it is greatly appreciated.”

“Well, if you ever need some company in that big empty manor of yours, you know who to call!” Luz smiled brightly and gave me a loving kiss on the cheek.

Even after dating for nearly 5 months, we haven’t gone so far as to kiss on the lips. Sure, I want to. But I can’t bring myself to ask for more when I’m already receiving so much affection through cheek kisses, cuddles, hand holds, and lingering touches. I’m also not completely sure if Luz wants to kiss me. Yeah, I could probably just talk to her about it, but that is far too nerve wracking for my little gay heart.

“Well, since you offered,” I started, looking down at the blanket beneath us. “Ed and Em are going to their partners’ houses for the weekend. Wanna spend the night or something?”

“That sounds great!” I looked up to see Luz beaming. “I’ll just have to ask Eda, but you know her. She’ll probably say yes, unless she’s got some weird scheme to drag me on.”

I laughed, knowing how true that statement was. “Yeah, that sounds about right,”

Luz cuddled back up into my side, kissing my shoulder affectionately. “I love y- SPENDING TIME WITH YOU, HA!” She shot up, a look of slight panic and embarrassment on her face.

Yeah, we haven’t said that either. It’s not like we don’t you-know-what each other. It's just that those three words mean so much, and personally, I would be afraid of scaring her away. Judging by her apprehension just now, I figured she wasn’t ready to say it. Which is totally fine! I could wait years to say those three words to Luz, as long as I still get to be with her.

I chuckled, smiling warmly to calm her down. “I love spending time with you too, Luz,”

She visibly relaxed at that, going back to snuggle into me. And with that, I looked out over the boiling sea to see that the sun was setting.

I sighed, not wanting the moment to be over, but having to break it all the same. “We should probably be heading home,”

Luz cracked her eyes open and looked at the horizon. “Yeah, I guess we should,” She got up, stretched, and began to pack away all the things that she’d need to carry home. This date was expertly planned by my awesome girlfriend, so most of the things were hers. “I know we planned this weekend already, but do you wanna come spend the night at the Owl House? I’m sure Eda wouldn’t mind.”

I smiled. “I’d love to, but I think Ed and Em are expecting me back at home,” I saw her shrink a bit, but she kept her positive attitude. “Why do you ask?”

“Is it so bad that I want to cuddle my girlfriend and fall asleep in each other’s arms, dreaming about all the wonderful things, and then wake up to that beautiful face?” She said dramatically, acting it out a bit as she went on.

“You’re adorable,” I laughed as I placed the last item in Luz’s basket. “And, no, that’s not so bad. I would want that too.”

“Well, if you can’t stay over, can I at least walk you home?” She offered, said basket stuffed with everything she brought in hand.

“You don’t have to do that,” I shook my head, taking her hand in mine.

“But I want to,” She rivaled the beauty of the setting sun over the ocean, the most adorable smile on her face and a little tilt to her head.

“Okay,” I conceded. How can I say no to that cute face? “If you insist.”

“Wow,” Luz looked shocked for a moment. “It took a lot less convincing this time.”

“Well, I’m in a good mood and you look especially beautiful right now,” I grinned at the blush that took over her face at my words.

“Aw, Amity,” She pushed me playfully as we started walking off the small dock. “Stop being so romantic. I might have to kidnap you.” She joked, giving my hand a squeeze.

“Hooty already did that once,” I pointed out. “I’d rather not be owl-pelleted again.”

“Fair, but I said that I’d have to kidnap you,” She booped my nose, giving me a smile. “I would never resort to such measures.”

“Despite being eaten by a bird tube, that night turned out alright, don’t you think?” I couldn’t help the smile that rose to my face when I recalled that night.

“Eh, it was okay,”

“Yeah, nothing too memorable,”

We both started laughing at our own jokes, and Luz nearly dropped her basket. After that, I had an abomination carry it.

Before I knew it, we arrived at the gates to Blight Manor, and Luz took her basket back from my abomination. We hugged tightly, and gave each other sweet kisses on the other’s cheek.

“I’ll see you tomorrow!” Luz waved as I walked up the path.

“Bring your overnight stuff to school Friday!” I reminded her as I waved back. “We’ll just head straight to my house!”

“We can’t go anywhere straight, Amity,” I could see her grin, despite how far away we were at this point.

I laughed despite myself, and gave her one last wave before entering my house. I leaned against the door, eyes closed, smile plastered onto my face.

“Soooo,” I jumped at the voice of my brother.

“How was your date?” Em finished the sentence, both of them leaning close to my face.

“Ugh, back off!” I pushed them away, already annoyed.

“Sorry, Mittens,” Ed shrunk a bit. “Still working on the personal space thing.”

I softened at his tone of voice. “It’s alright. I know you guys are trying,” I hesitated before saying, “Do you wanna hear about the date?”

They both immediately perked up, dragging me into the living room and sitting me in between them.

“Tell,” Em started.

“Us,” Ed spoke this time.

“Everything!” They both exclaimed with massive grins on their faces.

I sighed and started from the beginning, dreading the screams that would follow the story.

Luz P.O.V.

I left Blight Manor with a giddy smile and a skip in my step.

God I love that girl. Even if I was too scared to say it aloud.

My walk back to the Owl House was as peaceful as the Boiling Isles can be. I wasn’t attacked by some random demon and the sun was still up when I pushed my way past Hooty, meaning I’d made it before my “curfew”.

Eda didn’t like to use the word curfew, because she said, and I quote, “Too domestic and maternal for me.” So she calls it her ‘get back by this time unless you want to be eaten by a house demon time’. Yes, those were her exact words. I just paraphrase and say curfew.

“Hey, kid!” Eda greeted me as I shut the door on Hooty behind me. “You look happy.”

“Yep!” I skipped my way into the Owl House, dropped my basket by the door, and scooped up King, who was dozing on the couch. “How’s my favorite little tyrant?”

After getting over the shock of being awoken by my surprise hug, King smiled—well, his eyes smiled. I’m not sure that his mouth can smile since it’s basically a skull.

“Luz!” He made little grabby motions with his hands. “The King of Demons demands scratchies!”

“Oh, how could I refuse a direct order from the rightful ruler of all demons?” I sat down next to Eda and scratched King’s little stomach, drawing a happy sigh from the demon.

“How was the date?” Eda grinned knowingly.

“Oh my god, Eda,” I groaned and fell back onto the couch. “I’m a coward!”

Shocked by the sudden change in emotion, she placed a hand on my shoulder. “Woah woah woah. What’s wrong kiddo?”

“We’ve been dating for nearly five months and we haven’t even kissed yet!” I threw my hands over my face. “And I nearly said it today! What if she doesn’t want to kiss me! What if I scare her away when I say it!”

“Kid, calm down!” Eda grabbed both of my shoulders and shook me a bit. “First of all, you guys just keep going whatever pace works for you. If it takes a year to work your way up to kissing, so be it. And second of all, anyone with eyes can see that Boots is head over heels for you. No way that saying ‘it’ will scare her off.”

I took a deep breath, calming myself down. “Yeah, you’re right. Thanks for that,”

“Don’t worry about it, kiddo!” She slapped me on the back.

“Stop being all mushy gushy and pay attention to me!” King pouted, grabbing one of my hands in his little paws.

“You got it, all mighty tyrant,” I giggled and went back to paying attention to King.

There was still a worry in the back of my mind that one day, Amity will get sick of me. She’ll notice that I’m just some weirdo and that she can do better. I can only hope that it won’t hurt as bad as I’m imagining it to.

After a bit spent with Eda and King, I went off to bed, slipping into my sleeping bag with the little furry demon at my feet. I fell asleep pretty quickly, but it wasn’t long before my overactive and overthinking brain decided to conjure something up for me.

It started out with Amity and me walking through some really pretty garden—it was bright, filled with colors, and well tended to. We were talking, hand in hand, but I couldn’t tell you what we were saying. It was rather calm and pleasant compared to the dreams I usually had. And of course, that wouldn’t last.

After what felt like no time at all, Amity was gone. The steady warmth in my hand had disappeared and there was no one at my side. The garden darkened and turned into more of an overgrown and dead jungle. Whipping my head around, I looked for my girlfriend. It wasn’t like her to just leave me like that. How could I just let her go? Is she alright? What happened to make her leave?

As those questions were running through my head, I spotted a flash of purple a bit back into the brush.

I called out for her, but there was no response. All I could hear were the sounds of someone running, and something much larger and much more dangerous chasing.

I sprinted full out in the direction of where I last saw that flash of cotton-candy hair, praying to the titan that Amity was alright, and this was just some crazy misunderstanding.

Now I was sprinting through a forest, branches and thorns cutting at every inch of exposed skin, cold air whipping my hair back and making my eyes water. Well, that last part very well could have been tears.

I reached a clearing and stopped to look around. Originally, I saw nothing, and I went to turn back to where I came from, but then I heard a whimper behind me. I whipped around and smack in the middle of the clearing was Amity. At first glance, she appeared to be alright. Just shaken. But on closer inspection, she was clutching her side, eyes screwed shut in pain, but tears still finding a way through.

I called out for her again and ran towards her. When I was a few feet away, I seemed to hit a wall. I couldn’t get any closer to comfort her. To make sure she was okay. My heart ached and tears flowed freely now.

Then I heard her voice. It was so quiet. So unnaturally quiet. The pain was palpable. There was no denying that she was hurt at this point.

“Luz…” She repeated my name, over and over, in a hushed, breaking voice. Then, “Please… please, h-help…”

I slammed my fists into the invisible wall, screaming her name. She didn’t open her eyes. My voice didn’t even seem to register.

Then there was another voice. This one was much stronger, and it didn’t seem to fit what was going on here.

“Luz!”

I looked around, stunned into silence for a moment.

“Luz!” There was a pressure on my shoulder, and I looked over to see nothing.

What the heck is going on..? I thought.

“Luz, please, wake up!”

This time the voice snapped me out of whatever dreamland I was stuck in and I sat up quickly, in a cold sweat.

“Oh, good,” King sighed and crawled up onto my lap. “It looked like you were having a nightmare, and a boo-boo buddy doesn’t let another boo-boo buddy suffer.”

I took deep calming breaths, at first, barely registering King’s words. But after a moment, I calmed myself down enough to respond.

“Thanks, King,” I pet his head lightly, still only half present. The memory of what was going on in my dream still plagued me.

“Are you okay?” He asked, concern filling his voice.

I shook my head to clear it of any bad thought. “Yeah!” I put on a smile in hopes to make myself more convincing.

King looked at me with disbelief written all over his features, but it seemed that he was too tired to deal with all the emotions at the moment, and he just curled up in my arms, only to fall asleep a few seconds later.

The rest of the night was spent staring up at the ceiling, trying to calm my beating heart. Before I knew it—also before I managed to close my eyes—Eda burst into my room to wake me for school.

“Wa- oh hey kid,” She stopped herself when she saw that I was already awake. “How long have you been up?”

“I don’t even know anymore,” I flopped down, splaying my arms out beside me. “Woke up in the middle of the night and couldn’t go back to sleep.”

“Well, that explains why you look like you got mauled by a trash slug!” Eda cackled and wiped a tear from her eye.

All I did was stare at her, unamused. “Thank you, Eda,” I rolled my eyes and stood, heading off to the bathroom so I could get ready for the day.

In no time at all I was walking up the steps of Hexide and stopping at my locker.

I didn’t notice that someone was sneaking up behind me until I felt arms wrap around my waist. “Hey, Luz!”

Instinctively, I pulled out glyphs, ready to fend off impending danger. Instead of impending danger, I was met with a very shocked, purple-haired witch.

“Oh, geez Amity, I’m sorry,” I put my glyphs away and returned her hug.

“Are you okay?” She asked, glancing over my features.

“Of course!” I chuckled nervously. “Why wouldn’t I be?”

She raised a brow, giving me an unamused look. “Luz, I can tell when something is wrong. You never react like that, and you usually don’t look this…”

“Dead,” Willow finished her sentence, giving me a concerned look.

“Wow, thanks for the vote of confidence,” I rolled my eyes at Willow and turned back to my girlfriend.

“Luz, you know you can tell me when something’s wrong, right?” She said softly, yet with a firmness that let me know she meant it.

“Yeah, of course I do,” I nodded. “And I will, just not right before class.” To prove my point, the warning bell screamed and students started rushing towards their classes.

“You’ll tell me at lunch, alright?” Amity tightened her grip around me so that I couldn’t slip away before I answered.

“Yeah, I will,” I nodded profusely. “But now we have to go to class.”

“Right,” She let me go and gave me a quick kiss on the cheek. “See you at lunch!”

“See you…” My voice trailed off as I started sulking to my first class.

The day dragged on until, finally, it was time for lunch. I usually sat with Willow, Gus, and Amity, but today, I had other plans. I need to have a private conversation with my awesome girlfriend. It’s not that I don’t trust Gus and Willow, it’s just a touchy subject, and it seems a bit above their pay grade. Also, it really had nothing to do with them, and there would be a lot more progress made if I spilled these emotions to Amity.

When I walked up to our table, I found everyone already seated and eating.

“Hey, Ami,” I said quietly, not sitting down. “Do you mind coming with me for lunch today?”

I saw Willow and Gus give each other a look, but Amity just nodded, blushing a bit.

“You want us to tag along?” Gus asked and then flinched when Willow smacked him in the arm. “What? I was just asking!”

“Thanks for the offer Gus, but I just need to talk to Amity,” I smiled at him and waved them both goodbye as me and my girlfriend walked out of the cafeteria and into one of the back hallways where no one goes.

When we both sat down on the ground against the wall, I reached over to grab her hand. As a sigh left my mouth, I leaned my head back against the wall and my shoulders relaxed.

“What’s wrong?” Amity ran her thumb over the back of my hand.

“You know, if you ever find someone better, don’t feel bad about leaving me,” I said suddenly, sadness filling my voice.

“Where did that come from?” She sounded shocked, but I couldn’t see her face. I was facing the ceiling with my eyes closed.

“I dunno… it just feels too good to be true, you know?” I turned to look at her, head still tilted back.

“Luz, there is no one else on these isles that I would want to be with rather than you,” She stated firmly. “Now, I know we haven’t talked about this…” She hesitated a bit. “But I think you need to hear it.”

“Amity, wha-” Before I could finish my question, I was cut off.

“I love you, Luz,” Her face flushed red, but she held eye contact. “I love you more than anyone else in this realm, or any other, and nothing can change that. Alright?”

For a moment, I was stunned into silence. Her words rang through my head, over and over again.

“I love you, Luz,”

Tears spilled from my eyes as I pulled Amity into a bone-crushing hug. “You’re the best girlfriend ever,” I whispered into her shoulder. “And I love you too.”

She returned the hug with just as much force, moving me so that I was now sitting in her lap, wrapped around her body like a koala. “Don’t cry,” She ran a hand up and down my back.

“They’re happy tears,” I squeaked out, smiling into her cotton-candy hair.

A few minutes passed like this as my tears slowed, and then stopped. Amity’s comforting hand on my back, however, didn’t stop moving.

“Do you want to eat something before lunch is over?” She asked softly.

I just nodded and pushed myself up from my seat on her lap—or, at least I tried to. My awesome girlfriend held me down. “Doesn’t this hurt? I’m not exactly light,” (wow what a pun by me)

“No, it doesn’t hurt,” Amity shook her head. “It’s kinda nice, actually.”

“Okay,” I settled back down and reached over to grab some food off my tray, but once again, Amity stopped me. “Are you gonna let me do anything?” I asked with a grin.

“Nope,” She said simply, picking up half of my PB&J and holding it up to my mouth. “Open.”

I chuckled, but let Amity feed me. Yeah, it was a bit weird, but I found it very cute and very romantic.

We spent the rest of lunch doing that back and forth. When the bell screamed, I didn’t want to leave, but of course, we had to separate and get to our final classes for the day.

The next two days passed without further incident, and the next thing I knew, I was leaving school on Friday with Amity to go to Blight Manor.

Out of all mornings, today was the day that Hooty decided to be a pain, and I forgot to bring my overnight bag. Amity offered to stop by the Owl House and grab it, but I didn’t really feel like walking all the way there, only to backtrack and head the opposite way to get to Amity’s house.

When we arrived at said house, Amity led me up to her room and had me put my school bag by her desk.

“You can just borrow some clothes to sleep in, if you’d like,” Amity offered, sitting down on her bed and motioning for me to join her.

“That would be awesome, thank you,” I climbed up next to the witch and snuggled into her side.

“What do you wanna do?” Amity asked, running a hand through my short hair. “We could watch some movies on the crystal ball, play games, read Azura…”

“Can we just stay here for a minute?” I asked, voice muffled by the fact that I’d buried my face into my girlfriend.

“Of course,” She whispered and kissed the top of my head.

“I love you so much,” I mumbled, grinning at the warmth that immediately radiated from Amity’s face after those words left my mouth.

It took a minute for her to calm herself down enough to utter a response, but that just told me that she meant it. “I love you more,”

“Not possible,” I nuzzled more into her neck, placing a soft kiss there as I did.

She groaned and put her face in her hands. “Stop being so cute!”

I perked up, smirking at her as she slowly lowered her hands. “Why? Am I making you…flustered?” At the end of my sentence, I got close to her face, resulting in us being mere inches apart.

Amity squeaked and nodded, gaze darting between each of my eyes.

“But if I stopped, I wouldn’t get to see this cute face,” I whispered with a grin, my eyes quickly glancing down towards her lips and just as fast back up to her eyes. Before the situation escalated, I leaned back to let her breathe, blushing a bit as I rubbed the back of my neck nervously. “Sorry about that, heh. You’re just really cute when you get all flustered.”

“It’s alright,” Amity finally said after taking a moment to breathe.

After a short bit of silence, I got her attention with a question. “Do you wanna read Azura now?”

“Sure!” The witch smiled, getting up to walk over to her small bookshelf. “Which volume? We could start from the beginning, maybe work in reverse. Or! We could just pick a favorite!” She rambled off, grabbing all 6 books in the series and bringing them over to my perch on her bed. “Oh! Maybe we can act out some of the scenes too!”

I smiled warmly at her enthusiasm, listening attentively as she continued to rant about some of her favorite scenes in the books.

I could listen to her talk forever. Her voice was just so soothing.

“But overall, I thought that it was really unnecessary and-” She paused, seeming to realize how long she’d been talking. “I was ranting again, wasn’t I?”

“I mean yeah,” I nodded, only smiling more. “But it’s cute.”

Her cheeks flushed a bit as she grinned. “Everything you do is cute,”

“Awww, Amity!” I jumped up from my spot on the bed and pulled my girlfriend into a bone-crushing hug.

“Luz,” Amity squeaked out. “As much as I love this, I can’t really breathe.”

“Oh! Sorry!” I let her go and backed up to sit on the other side of the bed.

“Which one do you wanna read?” She laid all the books out in between us, and I pointed to book six. “Ah, the one focused on Hecate and Azura’s relationship. Of course.”

Yes, the sixth book was very much focused on the relationship between the Warrior of Peace and her former rival, but there was one scene in particular that I wanted to act out with Amity. Whether or not we get to it tonight would be the question.

We didn’t. We only got about halfway through the book until we both decided that we’d better soothe our roaring stomachs. As much as I wanted to get to that special scene, I was really hungry.

And after eating dinner, we decided to play a couple card games, and that’s what we did until we were both too tired to think clearly. That’s when Amity pulled me up by my wrist and dragged me over to her bed, snuggling up to me once we’d both laid down.

“We should do this more often,” She muttered into my neck.

“The cuddling or the sleepover?” I asked, running my hand through her lilac hair.

“Both,”

“Yeah,” I smiled and kissed the top of her head. “We should.”

Amity yawned, sitting up as she did. “I’ll go grab you something to change into,” She dug through her dresser and pulled out an oversized t-shirt and a simple pair of shorts, handing them to me as she collected her own pajamas. “You know where the bathroom is, right?”

“Yep!” I took the offered clothes and skipped off to the bathroom just down the hall.

Just as I finished changing, there was a gentle knock on the door and the soft voice of my awesome girlfriend floated to my ears. “Can I come in?”

“Yeah,” I reached over and unlocked the door—after living in the Owl House, you learn to leave it locked—letting the witch into the room.

“You know I wouldn’t just walk in here, right?” She asked with a grin.

“Yes, I know you have a sense of decency. Some certain house-mates, however, do not,” I shuddered, recalling all the times Hooty and King have walked in on me. It happens with Eda too, but not nearly as much after the first few times.

“Yeah, it’s become a habit for me too,” Amity chuckled and leaned down to go through a cabinet under the sink. “Here’s a toothbrush. You can just keep it here, I guess.”

There was something about the idea of having a toothbrush at my girlfriend’s house that made me giddy, a small blush overcoming my face as I smiled. It seems so weird and insignificant, but sometimes it's the little things that bring me joy.

The two of us quickly got ready for bed, and soon, we were cuddled up under the covers. I was cradled in Amity’s arms and I could hear her beating heart, combined with her slow, steady breathing.

“I love you,” I whispered, nuzzling more into her chest.

“I love you more,” She gave the top of my head a loving kiss.

“Good night, mi amor,” The pet name rolled so easily off my tongue, and it didn’t register in my mind that I’d said it until I heard Amity’s heart rate speed up.

“What does that one mean?” She questioned. I’d been slowly teaching Amity some of the common Spanish phrases, mostly so she could understand my small outbursts.

I chuckled nervously, but somehow found my voice. “My love,”

Her heart beat faster as she whispered, “I like that one,”

“Well then, I’ll have to call you it more often,” I chanced a glance upwards at the witch’s face. She was looking at me with clear love and adoration in her eyes. “Good night, mi amor.”

“Good night, my awesome girlfriend,” With that, I tucked my head back into her chest and closed my eyes, preparing for sleep to take over.

Luckily enough for me, it took over rather quickly. Unluckily, this was one of those nights.

It started in a similar manner to the one I’d had earlier in the week, Amity and I doing something cute and romantic. Unlike last time, however, we were sitting under the grom tree… kissing.

The feeling of her soft lips fitting so perfectly with mine felt oh so real, and it filled my chest with that warmth that accompanied being with my girlfriend. The silky smoothness of her lilac hair running between my fingers was not something new, but in this context, it was especially romantic and loving. The hands gripping at the base of my shirt were gentle, yet firm, screaming the silent message of, ‘don’t let me go’.

It was so surreal that I almost smiled when she pulled away. Almost.

The look in her eyes turned that smile into a nervous frown. She had a look of pure terror that had drained the color from her face. Her eyes were locked on something behind me and her nails started digging into my sides with how tight she was holding onto me.

As I turned around, I expected to be met with something terrifying. Something that could rip me to shreds in seconds. What I wasn’t expecting was what I saw. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. I turned back, and where Amity had sat only seconds ago, all that was left was her moon necklace. I didn’t even notice that the hands at my sides had disappeared.

How could I let this happen?! Why did I turn around?! If I’d have just kept her in my sights, maybe she would still be okay!

As I frantically stood up and looked around, I saw her. Standing on the edge of the cliff. The figure that grom had transformed to that fateful night was next to her.

Before I could react, she was pushed off the edge. A blood curdling scream filled my ears, and I sprinted towards the cliff, searching my pockets for the glyph that might just save her.

Wait.

Where are my glyphs?!

How in the Boiling Isles did I not bring any glyphs!

Instead of saving the tumbling girl, I could only watch as she fell into the abyss below, screaming her name, in some misguided hope that it would bring her back to me.

“Luz!” A pressure on my shoulder, and I was falling too.

Well, at least we’ll be together.

“LUZ!” Another push, this time, bringing me out of the nightmare I was trapped in.

I sat up quickly, breathing heavily as tears streamed down my face.

“Luz, are you okay?” Amity’s soft voice next to me sent me into a fit of sobbing. “Woah woah woah!” Her arms wrapped around me and I was pulled closer to her.

For the next few minutes, Amity soothed me, whispering anything comforting that came to mind.

“Shhh, everything is okay,” Her hands were rubbing my back, and at this point, I was back into koala mode. “I’m right here. Don’t worry, I’ve got you.” When I calmed down enough, she spoke again. “It seemed like you were having a nightmare. Do you wanna talk about it?”

I sniffled and nodded. “We- we were, um… together under the grom tree…” I omitted the kissing part so that it wouldn’t be as awkward. “And then you got really scared about something behind me, and when I looked, there was nothing, but when I turned back, you were gone and I panicked!” I took a deep breath and continued. “When I looked around, I saw you on the cliff and grom was next to you, and before I knew what was going on, you were pushed off the cliff-” My voice broke as I started crying again. “And when I tried to save you, I realized that I didn’t have any glyphs and I could only watch you fall and there was nothing I could do to save you!”

“Luz, it’s okay,” She put a hand up to my face and wiped away some of the tears with her thumb. “None of that happened. I’m right here, and I’m okay.”

“I know it’s not real, and I know it’s stupid, but I don’t want to lose you!”

“Luz, it’s not stupid,” She gave me a loving, but stern look. “I know what you’re feeling. I feel the same way. After the battle with the Emperor, I had the same sort of dreams. Do you want to know what I did?” I nodded, now fully invested in what she had to say. “I would call Eda, in the middle of the night, and ask her to make sure you were still there.”

“And she just did it?” I asked, stunned that Eda would interrupt her precious sleep for something so seemingly insignificant.

“Well, at first she was pretty pissed, but she would always check for me anyways. I think she understood what I was going through,” She smiled softly. “And every time she would show me that you were peacefully sleeping. Usually the days after that happened were the ones I was more clingy. But it always helped me when I was close to you.”

“This does help,” I buried my head into her shoulder, inhaling her sweet, lavender, slightly minty, scent.

“Do you need anything else?” Amity’s arms wrapped their way around my back to hold me tightly. “A glass of water, another blanket..?”

“Just cuddles,”

“Okay,” She kissed the side of my head lovingly. “Then let’s get a bit more comfortable, alright?”

I nodded and unraveled my arms and legs from around her, only to tangle our limbs together once more after we’d laid down.

And for a while, there was silence. I could tell that she was still awake since her hand was still rubbing my back lovingly, but we didn’t speak. It was comfortable. It was peaceful. It was safe.

“Hey, Ami?” I whispered, not trusting my voice to stay steady at a higher volume.

“Yeah?” She whispered back, sounding slightly worried.

“Can we do this more?” I asked hesitantly. “The sleeping together thing, I mean.”

“I would love to, Luz, but how would that really work?” She questioned. “I don’t think it’s considered a sleepover if it keeps going.”

“What if we went back and forth between here and the Owl House?” I suggested, formulating the plan in my head. “Like, maybe here one day, and my place the next?”

“How about we stay at one place for a bit longer? Like two or three days at one house, and then two or three at the other,” Amity proposed. “Just so we won’t be dragging everything we need back and forth so often.”

“Yeah, that sounds a lot better,” I agreed.

“One problem though,”

“Hmm?”

“Would Eda really want us doing that? I know Ed and Em wouldn’t mind. They’d just tease me about it for a little while and then leave it alone,”

“I don’t think she’d care all that much,” I said truthfully. “But the other thing to consider is that I don’t always stay in the Isles.”

“I’ll just join you then,” Amity stated firmly. “If you want me to, that is.”

“I do,” I nuzzled further into our shared embrace, smiling at the thought of what’s to come.

The room was once again filled with a comfortable silence. But both of us still laid awake. I can’t speak for Amity, but there were so many thoughts still running through my mind.

“Luz?” Amity’s soft voice broke the silence this time. I hummed in acknowledgment and let her continue. “Can we talk about something?”

“That seems to be the running theme of tonight,” I laughed lightly and brought my head back so that I could look at her.

“This is a little weird to ask about… but before either of us oversteps…” She paused, seemingly to collect herself. “How do you feel about kissing?”

My heart rate sped up drastically, and I cleared my throat to—hopefully—make my voice steadier. “Well, I don’t want to put any pressure on you or anything, but it is something I’d like to do with you,”

“Oh, thank titan,” Amity sighed in what sounded like relief. “I was worried that I’d make you uncomfortable.”

“So does that mean..?” I started, a shred of hope filling my voice.

“Yes! I feel the same way, Luz,” Amity was gazing at me with absolute love and adoration, and it took all my strength not to lean in right then and there.

“Well then, may I kiss you, Amity Blight?” I asked with a little grin.

“Please do,” She nodded profusely.

There was practically no space between us to begin with, but in one swift motion, I closed the gap, pressing my lips into hers. For a moment, neither of us moved. But then, all at once, we were kissing. I was kissing Amity, and—oh Dios mío—she was kissing me back! My inner hopeless romantic cheered as I moved my hand up from around her torso to tangle my fingers in her lilac hair. Her beautifully soft lilac hair.

Her hands—that were previously wrapped protectively around my shoulders—worked their way down my sides to rest at my waist. My shirt had ridden up from repositioning while laying down, so when her soft fingers reached their destination, it sent a shiver up my spine. She hesitated after realizing there was no fabric between her touch and my skin, but I quickly moved my other hand down to encourage her to keep up what she was doing.

Minutes were spent like that. Every kiss, every caress, every inch of contact sent shockwaves through my body. It was like what it felt like to touch Amity normally, just tenfold. Every sense was heightened and I couldn’t do anything but relax and kiss back with everything I had.

Eventually, we were both out of breath and we had to break apart, despite the fact that I wanted to continue what we were doing.

“Oh my titan, I love you so much,” Amity whispered, leaning her forehead against mine with a huge smile on her face.

“I love you more,” I said quietly back, grinning like an idiot.

“I guess we should go to sleep now, huh?”

“Yeah, probably,” I kissed her lips lightly. “Good night, mi amor.”

“Good night,” She hugged me close once again, and I could hear her breathing start to even out, and I knew she was asleep.

Soon, I felt myself drifting off as well, and before I knew it, the sun would be shining through the windows, and I will have had the best sleep of my life. But for now, I was dreaming about what was to come, knowing I had the love of my life to guide me through whatever this world would throw our way.
