Chapter 1: blurring days

Chapter Text

Her life went on, it literally had to or her parents wouldn’t make her hear the end of it.
Since they broke the news about Oregon, she was ready to just let her grades drop to spite them.

They would be breathing down her neck even more if she went through with her scheme, so she did not go through with it.

So she stayed at the top of her class. Her only motivation being her two best friends and Vagabondia Chronicles.

The moment Anne and Sasha said their good nights or fell asleep, her mind was left with everything she put off thinking about.

The staring eyes at school, her parents expectations and them. Anne and Sasha still had each other, so it probably was just a matter of time, until she became an afterthought.

The grip on her pillow tightened before looking at her bedside table. Reaching over, she grabbed her switch. She booted it up, beginning yet another playthrough of games she practically had memorized at this point.

She would play until her eyes were hollowed out with exhaustion, sleep forgotten. At this point she was running solely on caffeine and was left to chew on the coffee beans.

Something she picked up from Sasha, who ate them just to spite Anne. She chuckled weakly at the thought.

While getting ready, she would sometimes have a peek at a mirror. Her short jetblack unruly, bloodshot pupils mere pinpricks and bags under eyes to go along with them.

As indifferent as she was to it, Anne and Sasha voiced their concerns any chance they had a look at her. She always brushed it off with ‘video game induced insomnia’, yet that seemed to convince them less and less.

Sasha already threatened to drive to Oregon herself and force her to take care of herself. Marcy was very tempted to let that happen but the worried look in her friends' eyes convinced her otherwise.

They were already planning on spending Christmas together like they always did and she was looking forward to it.

Her parents had no objections to it, just an excuse to go to work instead. The paid ticket would be her christmas gift from them.
Frankly she could live with that, instead of them pretending they were a happy family. Like they used to do, when she was a kid.

It's not like they got married and had her out of love. It was mere portfolio thinking, road to success and the ability to boast to colleagues.

Well, not everyone was meant to have what Anne took for granted. Her friend looked baffled once she opened up about her home life during one of their sleepovers.

With tears in her eyes, Anne captured her in a firm hug. Sasha had a far off look in her eyes, probably thinking about her own parents.

Sashas parents had a whirlwind romance and had her when they were barely out of college. It was fine at first but as Sasha got older her parents lost in their fights and culminated into a messy divorce.

Sasha was left to watch all of it as a spectator, being pulled left and right by her parents to determine who would get custody over her.

Anne was the first to fall asleep that night, crying, leaving her exhausted leaving Sasha and Marcy sitting in a circle in silence.

After what felt like hours Sasha shuffled closer to Marcy and gently took her hand. Marcy was startled at first before seeing a look of understanding in her blue eyes.

Mere weeks ago was their ruined sleepover which made the two of them reconsider a lot about their flawed friendship.

They decided to start new and here in the dark Sasha holding her hand, she squeezed back gratefully.

She was snapped out of her memories by the school bell signaling the end of their day. Quickly making her journey ‘home’ she was met with a clear driveway.

She stepped into her room, dropping her bag on the floor and throwing herself onto her covers.

She looked at her bedside table and saw a small calendar. Leaning over she marked off another day.

Marcy sighed, sinking back into her sheets. She couldn't wait for Chrístmas and gladly waited out the eons, until she saw her girls again.
