There was a strange finality in the air, the feeling weighing Chris down and pressing against his chest in a way that was making it hard to breathe. The BOW seemed to be able to sense it too as it arose from within the tank, water streaming off its scales and dripping to the floor - roaring at them as if it was throwing the gauntlet down for a fight. While the BOW screeched at them, the sound ear piercing and painful, Chris took the opportunity to see what the monster looked like.

Summary
Nowadays, Piers has many more good days than bad. Occasionally, however, he's forced to truly face how a virus continues to affect his body and his life. The worst reminder of that ended up landing him in the hospital for three full weeks. This is easily the second worst time: being exposed to a new viral strain that was, in part, a C-Virus cousin at best.
Chris fought for him to spend most of his recovery time at home, most likely aided by Leon's first-hand account of events. Piers doesn't know all the details. He does know that his body feels wrong in about five different ways, all the meds suck, food tastes bland, he can't sleep, and he can't even try to rest in his own bed — his and Chris's bed.
He also knows Chris can't sleep, either. Even when Leon is available to tag in to help.

The air is hot around Leon as he chokes on smoke and ash, the child in his arms still sobbing and coughing into the rag he'd tied hastily over the bottom half of her face as he crawls on his hands and knees through the flaming hallways of the apartment building. He's not wearing any of his equipment, just the sweats and t-shirt he'd had on at home, the fire alarm and resulting evacuation of his own building not giving him time or resources to don his firefighting gear and gas mask.
