Summary
When you had been diagnosed with two lifelong, chronic illnesses your first year in high school, you had instantly shifted your plans. Away from grand aspirations, away from long-term plans, and into reality. Ever practical, you channeled your focus into things you knew would help down the line, even if it's not fun now. Learned how to mitigate. Learned how to work with it, day in and day out.
And then a bunch of turtles get into a fight right outside your window, and suddenly the exhausting life path laid out before you looks a little more interesting.
This is my love letter to the chronically ill people in the TMNT fandom.

“It’s not difficult, it’s just wrong,” Raph growled. He couldn’t look at her. This was the thing. The thing that made everyone look at him with pity. Like he was defective or broken. Like he was some stupid idiot who couldn’t get with the program.
But it was everyone else who was wrong. Raph was the only one who was living in reality.
“Leo. Isn’t. Dead.”
_________________It's been two years since Leo's disappearance. The city has erected a monument in Bryant Park to honor and mourn New York's bravest young hero.
While Leo's statue sits in the park, Raph sits in therapy. Everyone believes Raph is too traumatized, too wounded to process the loss of his brother.
But there's something Raph can't explain, something only he can feel, something everybody wants him to ignore. It whispers softly somewhere in the deepest corners of his mind: he's still here.
Raph listens.

Draxum's cheeks turned a bright pink from shame when he admitted: "As of yet your family are unaware of your untimely demise."
A flash of blue ignited in the darkness, sparked from Leo's rage flaring up when he aggressively accused: "You didn't TELL them!!?"
"I..." before Barry had a chance to respond, the enraged slider demanded in no uncertain terms: "TELL them TO-NIGHT!!!" Then he was gone - leaving to spend as much time with his family as possible before sunrise came to force him back to that lonely place of Limbo.

Leo died, his family doesn't know yet, and he can only interact with Draxum. All this changes when a Bringer of Death extends an invitation to join his kind, promising Leo will be able to return to earth with his family . . . but as a vampire.
What he will choose will not only shape the rest of his afterlife, but also put the power of life and death for many in the palms of his hands.

Leo has his own ways. They may not be "healthy" per se, but they keep him grounded enough to put a smile on his face and pretend that he has his shit together. He doesn't, though. Not on the inside. His mind is a dumpster fire, begging to be extinguished. But he can't share, or he risks burning the ones he loves in the process. Leo would sooner die by the blade of his own sword than risk the safety of his family.

There, standing tall, and incredibly intimidating was someone in full armour with a huge sword stuck in the ground. It was pretty much dark except for the stars, and the fire magic from the King and Queen.
Their black cape was difficult to see in the darkness, but Sans was reminded of those action figurines Papyrus liked to collect, particularly the knight ones.
And, that sword was glowing.
Sans cursed and hoped that he wouldn't have to fight, he doesn't the energy left after the climb.
"..Tell me," the voice was husky and feminine, and Sans suppressed a shiver at the tone.
"Will there be a war?"

Klunk is looking intently at their hands, lifting Mikey's now to examine it the way he had done with hers. When she finally looks up at him, Mikey smiles at her. Klunk meets his gaze steadily, her eyes flicking back and forth across his face.
Then she smiles.
A big smile, not something small or shy.
It's like a beam of sunlight shining right into his heart. And then Klunk smacks Mikey in the face, the exact same way she always does when she's trying to get him to laugh, and it works, startling one out of him around the tightness in his throat. He hears Draxum mutter, "Ugh. Repulsive," and turns to watch the goat-man stomp out of the room. Well, Mikey doesn't care what he thinks. He doesn't care what any of them think. How could he give her away, just because she's different now? Just because it might make things harder? How could he give her to people he doesn't even know, and just hope that they take care of her and treat her right?
Even if someone else would, he'd regret it for the rest of his life.
Mikey's a No Regrets kind of guy.
