Whatever they ended up calling the red knot between them, they really were partners, like it or not. Bound by something as endless and all-consuming as the sea.

In 2016, the Phantom Thieves came together in Tokyo, and forged the kind of bonds that last a lifetime. Bonds that survive fights with false gods, false realities, death and return. These are bonds that survive growing up. Bonds that survive the march of time, months and years and decades. Bonds that survive becoming adults, and all the mundane day to day realities of time.
Twenty five years later, the Phantom Thieves are still the Phantom Thieves, no matter how what else happens in their lives. But with new threats on the horizon, a kind of conclusion is making its way toward the Phantom Thieves.
...a passing of the torch, to the next generation.
The end of a story, and the start of something new.

In which Akechi dies in Shido's Palace, wakes up a year in the past, and within about ten seconds manages to alter the timeline enough to make sure the Phantom Thieves will never exist. Which is annoying, actually, because it turns out he could have used their help ruining Shido without getting himself murdered (again).
Now their leader's stuck in his hometown, the rest of the Thieves have no idea he's missing, and Akechi's going to have to fix this himself, apparently.
