“I don’t want you to die.” Pugsley replied softly.
“Why not?”
“I-I guess- I guess I’m lonely too. Besides my parents, you're the first person I’ve talked to all summer.”
Isaac crossed the floor to the bedside in only a few steps, his hand raised and hovering in the air. He was reaching out to swipe away Pugsley’s tears before he had even realized what he was doing.
“Maybe we can be lonely together, Pugsley.” He spoke softly. “Wouldn’t it be nice?”
Pugsley rubbed his eyes harshly with the back of his hand and sniffed. It was hard to see his face in the low light, but for a second, it seemed as though a ghost of a smile flickered across his expression. He looked back up towards Isaac and their eyes met.
“Yeah,” Pugsley agreed. “Yeah, it would be.”

Tommy was never the kind of guy who devoured novels about princes and a happy life. But even so, this book is a collection of jeers at the logic of its main characters.
But fate is a real bitch. Tommy woke up in the icy bed of the Arctic Empire. And may his tongue rot, but it's damn unfair to take his life away from him, only to replace it with a crazy family of two brothers and one old man who look at Tommy as if they're sizing up whether they ought to finish off this unlucky relative.
Once, he used to laugh at them, goading Ranbu to run away from them and cursing the green bastard with all his might. Now he himself is part of this madness. And believe me, it's not funny at all when you're cornered by a guy whose face is a mask and whose mouth seems to drip venom.
Now he would have to play his part as Theseus and, in a last hope, try to return home. Even if it meant he would have to defy God.

Will sniffles, eyes flicking up to Lucas’s face, then down to his hand. Slowly, carefully, like he’s not sure if he’s allowed, he reaches out and places his hand in Lucas’s. His fingers are cold. “... I’m not dirty, either.”
Or, Lucas has been having a rough time at school. His neighbor's friend seems to be having a rough time, too. They both get it, somehow, even if it's not quite the same.

They are not public about their relationship, but Ilya sees no reason to lie when people ask him what he thinks of his biggest rival. Maybe it’s the Russian accent, though, because for some reason, everyone thinks he's joking.

It’s how this should work. If Enjin were a better man. If he didn’t just convince himself that all of FEMA’s warning signs are total bullshit. Who is he to condemn this boy to certain death over something that could be chalked up to a headache and some basic dental? He’s getting rusty. Or, soft. All it takes is a pitiful look and pretty face, and here he is ignoring basic Post-Cataclysm Survival 101.
Enjin pinches at the bridge of his nose. He’s only half convinced by the decision he settles on. It’s a gamble. Lucky for Zanka, it’s one he’s willing to take.
“It’s gettin’ a little packed in here, so you’ll have to bunk with me. That alright?”
“Huh?”Zanka looks up in utter disbelief.
