His best friend is asking for a divorce, he has a boring job and his boring co worker pities him enough to invite him to spend a few weeks with him and his family on their annual vacation to their summer cottage. And he's so pathetically lonely he accepts.
At 22, Shane has his whole life ahead of him. He's the captain of his university's hockey team, he's suspected to be the first draft pick in the MLH and he's able to maintain a 4.0 GPA on top of all that. His lack of a social life doesn't really bother him, he'll have time to date once he's achieved his life long dream. He's sure a girl will come along eventually.
OR Ilya is Shane's dad's hot co worker who ends up at the cottage one summer.

The lights became strangely bright, the music seemed to echo inside his skull instead of around him. His balance faltered as someone brushed past him, and he laughed automatically, though the sound came out slurred enough that it startled him.
Weird.
He hadn't had that much to drink.
He blinked hard, but the room refused to steady. People seemed to move half a second too late, their faces smearing together whenever he turned his head too quickly. His tongue felt thick in his mouth.
No. Something was wrong.
He should… he should find Marley, or Brad, or literally anyone.
He turned, intending to push through the crowd, only to stumble into someone's shoulder hard enough that they had to catch him before he fell. "Sorry," he tried to say, but it came out almost unintelligible. His pulse lurched.

In 2006, the Hollander family billeted a player to the Ottawa 67s - Ilya Rozanov, a 15 year old Russian Bostonian with a hockey talent to rival Shane's.
Years later, they’d once again share a team, and a home: Boston College.“Why did you choose to come here? It’s not like you couldn’t have gone anywhere else.”
Shane remembered his surprise at Ilya’s commitment. The calm of Boston College didn’t exactly fit Ilya’s predisposition.
Ilya looked thoughtful for a second, underneath the tumult on his face. “Other than the obvious? I don’t know. I think I just felt like this place was where I was meant to go.”
Shane understood that. After all, he’d felt the same way.
Ilya gently nudged him with his elbow. "Now you. Why are you here, Canadian boy?”
The corner of Shane’s lip raised, and he shrugged. “I wanted to be more than hockey. At least, for a little while longer.”
Ilya’s eyes locked on him, and a small smile reset the lines of Ilya’s face. “You couldn’t have done that in Canada?”
Shane shrugged again. “Sure, but Canada didn’t have you.”
Ilya looked down at the ground, and didn’t look back up as he spoke.

Summary
After his public affair with Rose Landry, when Shane tries to follow an angry Ilya out the back door of a Boston nightclub, a very inebriated Marleau agrees to let the drunk Metros player into Ilya's apartment to discuss hockey and their rivalry and just generally whatever... IF Shane agrees to take a little colored pill before he goes to talk to Ilya about his recent poor performance on the ice.
"I said, get out of my fucking house!" Ilya shouted.
Shane blinked in recognition, and after a second's hurt and shock, he suddenly felt overcome by very different emotions—ones of fear, rejection…and confusion.
His body felt weak as he leaned against the wall. He felt dizzy; he couldn't balance anymore, and his legs felt like jelly. As he pressed his palms up against the wall to get some sense of stability, Ilya's eyes widened with concern.
"What's going on, Shane?"
"S-sorry, Ilya…I feel a little weird, all of a sudden. I've never done this."
Resignation dawned on Ilya's face.
"Did Cliff give you something?"
"Huh?" Shane said as he looked up from his confused daze to glimpse at Ilya momentarily. "Oh? Yeah…He did. How could I forget…Some sorta pill…"

Summary
He's grinning, heart (and dick) pulsing at the rather flirty look Shane sends back at him as he skates off at speed, Ilya following quickly behind in an attempt to regain possession. Then, Marlow is pushing Shane into the boards with some force and capturing the puck himself. Which is… great, but Shane looks a little dazed. The angle had been just slightly awkward, and Ilya clenches his teeth at the thought of how bad that could have been.
Nevermind that, he thinks, giving Hollander a once over with his eyes to ensure there's no real damage, he has a game to win.

Summary
It does mean missing out on things like barbeques and team dinners sometimes, but it’s not as if he would have been able to participate anyway. At this point in his life, risking someone not taking his allergies seriously would mean potentially missing games, which makes it unacceptable. Jackie always makes sure he has a dish or two that’s safe when he’s over at their house, but if he was going to be the one guy sitting and drinking ginger ale instead of taking part in sharing nachos or Korean barbeque or burgers or any other delicious thing he goes in knowing he can’t have anyway, there’s no point in making a fuss about it. He eats at home, has a drink with everyone else, and he calls it a day. Easy. Safe. Foolproof.
But also the reason it doesn’t occur to him that he hasn’t actually told Ilya about any of his allergies until it becomes immediately relevant five days into being at his cottage together.
