Summary
For a long time, Alec had felt like his life was held together by strings tied on him by the Clave, his parents, his siblings. Strings that pulled and tugged him in every which direction, heedless of the bruises and blood left behind. As much as they hurt, some days they’d been the only thing to hold him together.
That is, up until the moment Alec stood on the shores of Lake Lyn and faced the death of the one person who held a piece of his soul, and the lies that followed his mysterious resurrection.
There, on the shores of Lake Lyn, those strings finally pulled too hard, and Alec broke.
With the permission of the Inquisitor, and the help of the warlock who Alec had wanted so desperately to allow himself to fall for (and had been terrified to do more than smile at his flirting) Alec walked away from everything and everyone. He left New York behind and made himself a home in the small town of Prayer – a joke Magnus found particularly funny.
But, two years after that fateful night, Alec’s old life comes knocking, and those strings he thought he’d finally cut are tugging him home. Back to the place he never wanted to have to see again.
At least this time, he’s not facing it alone.

“You scared?” The idiot asks. But his own voice is shaking and it's clear who's the one that's actually scared here, and it's not the one without the knife.
Leon grabs the arm with the knife as it's swung at him, he twists and pulls before suddenly the knife is dropping. Leon catches it easily with his free hand before bringing it up to inspect it after pushing his attacker back.
“Shotty craftsmanship only thing It's got going for it is it's sharp.” Leon lectures as he tests it on his arm and blows off the hair it shaved off. He then pulled out a knife of his own. It's a mean looking thing, absolutely military grade with a custom grip.
He holds it up so it's easily visible, “Mines better.” Is all he says before putting it away once more and places the one he confiscated on the bar top out of reach.

The Power that is chained lifts his head at the sound of footsteps. His mouth twists into a sneer.
“You are the last to come to gloat.”
The mask gazes blankly down at him, and from behind issues a voice that is soft-deep like water in a well, yet muffled slightly by the wood. “That is not my intended purpose.”
The bearer of that voice folds down upon her knees before the cage, and he watches her with baleful eyes of icy blue. “What is your purpose, then? What torment would Nienna in her ineffable wisdom inflict upon me?”
He has no weapon, so instead he sharpens his words into one. Yet Nienna seems ruffled not at all. She kneels grey and still as stone, and the mask’s closed eyes remain trained on him, and its wooden contours reveal nothing of the thoughts or feelings that might be bubbling underneath.
“I seek to inflict nothing,” she says, “only to share the gift that I was given, if you are willing. May I weep for you?”

“Come through here,” Halandil Fang says, gesturing him into the house.
It is odd, but nice. He looks very much like Thjazi. He does not sound, or move, like Thjazi at all. Similar enough to be comfortable and apart enough not to tug rough stitches in Azune’s heart loose again, ones that he had to put there now the Banner are all to be separated. Halandil moves with an elegant lethargy that Azune associates with the older soldiers he’s known, a certain economy of movement. Gentler than the old soldiers, of course. A bit more flourish maybe. That too.
(In which Hal loves all his children, including the one that Thjazi posted to his doorstep one day without any warning.)

After being kidnapped and held for ransom by one of the city's younger and more reckless thieves guilds, Azune is injured and traumatized to the point where his friends can't rescue him without hurting him worse. Letting Bolaire put him on/putting on the mask lets Hal, Bolaire, and Murray get him out of there, but taking him off again will be a lengthier, and gentler, process.

Summary
In the few brief heartbeats before his current body collapsed beneath him, Bolaire hoped he would dream of Hal. He'd never dreamt before, but what had there been to dream of? The Schemers wouldn't force Bolaire onto someone. No matter how much Hal might care about Bolaire as a friend, there were lines he wouldn't cross. Shouldn't cross.
When Bolaire's body dies, he resigns himself to be “sleeping” for a long time. Azune, with the help of the other Schemers, refuses to let that happen, even if it means wearing Bolaire himself. What's a little body-sharing between friends, right?

His jaw and hands ached as he bit down against the gag and tightened his fingers in the bonds. Looking forward so no one in the crowd could see the pain in his eyes, he forced himself to let his shoulders drop, made the muscles in his back relax. The less taught his skin was, the less deep the whip would cut."
Sir Harondis Einfasen has found out what Azune did to try to help Thjazi escape, and isn't willing to grant much clemency because it hadn't worked. After being imprisoned for two days while they decide what to do with him, Azune is taken to the Guardian Wall and whipped. Afterwards, Hal, Thaisha, and Occtis will take care of him (with a little extra help from Pin).
