For Akemi Homura, university life is something to be survived from a distance. Clumsy, shy, and perpetually fixing her twin braids, she spends her days trying to blend into the background. But when a sudden downpour forces her into the campus greenhouse, she gets pulled into the warm, sunlit orbit of Kaname Madoka.
While the rest of the campus gravitates toward Madoka's bright energy, Homura is terrified of ruining the perfect, fragile friendship they’ve built among the orchids and ferns. She doesn't realize that behind Madoka's easy smiles is a heart beating just as fast as her own, waiting for the perfect moment to overflow.
"I don't know why you won't give up on me, Madoka-san..." Homura whispered, her voice barely louder than the rain against the glass. She reached out, her fingers shaking as she gently brushed a stray, damp strand of pink hair away from Madoka's face.

Summary
The Law of Cycles reaches down. It does this always, that’s what it’s for, and what it is. As mundane as hope springing from a warzone, or the law that a small thing forever be drawn to something of sufficiently greater mass regardless of how far it’s thrown. It is not unused to touching that it reaches down for. It is not unused to the things it reaches down for shivering, in fear, rage, or ecstatic relief as the law rests its fingers against their hearts. It is not unused to how easily their bodies shed away from their hearts when the Law collects them, little more than a long abandoned shell. All of these things are as natural as it is.
It is not, however, prepared for somebody to reach back.
Homura Akemi takes it by the hand, plants her feet against its chest, and pulls. A sliver comes free, and dances off into the dark. It will take a long, long time for the Law to wonder where it’s gone.
It is much more interested in the novel sensation of heat flooding its chest. Searing and urgent. It runs a hand down the fissure and watches something wet and bright bubble through its fingers. This, it decides, must surely be love.

What follows is surveillance, bribery, magical girl duels, emotional warfare, and at least one rooftop breakdown—all over who gets to spend time with Homura.
Homura just wants to eat her bread in peace.
Unfortunately, peace is no longer an option.
