So he decides to travel to finally see a distant side of his family and soon discovers that strange things also happen in Derry. But perhaps that's what he needed, along with his cousin's help, to cope with his grief and discover himself.
And, as the months go by, maybe he'll need help from the people of Hawkins to face yet another threat.

Mike's an expert at pushing down his feelings so no one else can see them. He's had years of practice- but what happens when a supernatural enemy is inside his head and can see every thought he has? There's no hiding anymore, but Mike is nothing if not stubborn.
Sure, maybe he's been having more depressive thoughts recently- and the headaches, bloody noses, and terrible nightmares are getting worse- and sure, those are signs of Vecna's curse... but who else has to know but him?
Someone has to be fine, he can handle it. He always has. At least he's the one going through this and not any of the others!

Before Mike can even thank him for saving his life the millionth time, Will holds him by the shoulders, and, almost frighteningly solemn, tells him, “Mike, there’s something I need you to do.”
“Of course,” he rushes out. “Anything.”
Will’s mouth draws into a tight line. “I’m connected to Vecna. El is going in for the kill.”
Mike’s brain fills in the gaps, and he suddenly feels nauseous again. “You’re vulnerable as long as you’re still in the hivemind.”
Will nods. “I’ll help her for as long as I can, but I need you to burn the Mindflayer out of me one last time.”
Or, Mike Wheeler realizes that he's in love with Will Byers on the worst night of his life. It doesn't help that he's trying to burn himself alive for it.

Alone on a platform, the wind and the rain on a sad and lonely face.’When Lucas called Mike about his wedding, Mike's instinct was not to go. The same instinct that kept him from Dustin's wedding. The same instinct that kept him from the phone to call Will. Mike had spent the four years after graduation stuck in Hawkins, stuck working on his stupid novels that were going nowhere. He wasn't important to the world, and his friends knew that. They didn't need him anymore, so why would he try?
Why would he bother to follow anything but the mundane routine he had been scrambling after for weeks? He definitely wouldn't bother trying because an irritatingly familiar song keeps playing when he's alone. Nor when he hears an achingly familiar voice through the television.---

Summary
Weird things have always happened to Mike Wheeler. His best friend getting kidnapped by an inter dimensional monster, finding a bald girl with telekinesis, said best friend getting possessed by yet another inter dimensional monster, and more things revolving around this alternate dimension. The weirdest thing is probably finding out that he has powers from the crazy guy who kidnapped him. Well, at least he won’t be as useless anymore, right?

“You’re the one trapped in your own fucking mind,” Lucas argues. He gestures with a hand, eyebrow raised, to where someone is chatting Will up at the bar. “And you’re the one imagining a fake boyfriend for your best friend.”
Mike huffs. “What’s that s’pposed to mean?”
Lucas stares deadpan at him.
“Dude, the guy right there? Looks exactly like you. Just, like, less nerdy and stuff. Kind of less boney, too. I don’t wanna read too much into it, but… well, if you’re gonna have a sexuality crisis, you might as well do it before the end of the world.”

They won the battle and killed Vecna. El died in the aftermath. Oh, and Mike is a fantasy author living in Indianapolis in the 1990s. Somehow, it’s all connected.

Trying not to jump to conclusions too quickly, she resorts to going through boxes of stuff from his childhood. Here, is where she finds unsent love letters to a man named 'Will Byers' from 1986.
At this new discovery, and a confirmation from her Dad, one thing leads to another, and she devises a plan to Parent Trap her Dad with his long lost best friend, desperate to give both of them their happy ending after 35 years of no contact. Will Byers is convinced Mike hates him, but Maddy is there to show him he's wrong.

Painfully single Mike Wheeler has a lesbian daughter who finds out about her dad's sexuality, and the fact he's still in love with an old friend, and finesses them into reconnecting. Lowkey parent trap style.

I would make sure you’re safe.'Mike Wheeler carries a lot of regrets, and most of them are tinted with the shadow of Will Byers. He wants to be the Paladin. He wants to protect all his loved ones. But sometimes, the real world can’t work like a fantasy game.
Or: Mike falls under Vecna’s spell, and his greatest fears become the bridge that threatens to merge two dimensions into one.

“Come on,” Will tries. Mike keeps his head looking away across the street. Staring right at the Sinclair’s house. His jaw clenches at the sight, even though he sees the house everyday. “Mike, I know you, and you—”
“You don’t know me,” Mike spits. Instinct makes him want to glare at Will, but that means looking at him. “And I have nothing to say to you.”
He stands up. It’s only then that Will does the same.
“Look, Mike, I’m sorry,” Will blurts out. It makes Mike’s heart skip a beat in his chest before his heart remembers that it has no business doing that over Will Byers.

Will laughed as the tarp behind Jonathan fell again while taking photos while his mum picked up the phone. She frowned and Will could faintly hear Karen Wheeler’s frantic voice. Joyce lowered the phone to her shoulder and mouthed the words, “Mike has been missing since last night.”
The old cold feeling washed over Will again. No Mike probably stayed at Lucas’ house or something, right?
