What Mike wanted was to pretend everything was completely fine. To hang up the phone and continue to look away from the thing in the corner of his eye. But it was getting too large. The unrelenting blanket of anxiety was becoming too heavy, the escape route far too small.
Maybe that was why he found himself here, on the phone in the middle of the night. Talking to a boy hundreds of miles away.
He always was braver in the dark.

Everything sucks.
Hawkins is a fuckass town in bumfuck nowhere, Indiana. There's nothing to do, and no one living there. A population of nobodies in constant decline, some years steeper than others. Some causes more... supernatural, than others.
Mike can't say he particularly cares much. People are people, his friends are his friends, and his family is his family. Don't need to care about much else.
He doesn't mind the fact there's nothing to fucking do in Hawkins anymore. It's a good sign actually! A Hawkins with too much going on means inter-dimensional, government meddling bullshit. So this is great, actually! Really great... Super great... Yeah... There's nothing weird about anything in Hawkins anymore! The lab shut down years ago and after the mall went out in a blaze of glory, there's not much else to worry about.
Back to how its always been, and always will be. A small town of solitude.
No one's the wiser when Will and Jane spend the summers with him. No one's the wiser when they visit the Ives.
Because everything is normal, just like before. They're all normal people living in a normal town.
This is just how small towns are, ya know?

Mike watched as he rolled down the driveway and into the street, alone.
Will was almost out of eyeshot when Mike yelled, “Wait!” Will turned his head back to the garage, and Mike knew his body language well enough to conclude that he was confused.
He jogged to his bike in the corner of the garage, grabbing the handles and rolling it to the edge of the concrete garage floor. Then he stepped down, gliding to meet Will.
“I didn’t want you to ride home alone.”OR

Summary
Stranger Things Five Finale rewrite.
The party heads into the Upside Down with a plan to destroy both it and Vecna once and for all. Will thinks he has taken the steps necessary to keep Vecna from using his fear and his secrets against him. But he is not the only one who is scared and he is not the only one who is keeping secrets. Vecna has spotted Will's weakness, and if Mike can't face up to his own demons, admit his own feelings and stop being the most repressed asshole on the face of the planet then he risks losing everything that matters to him.

“Yeah, in DND Will, not real life.” Mike groans, stretching out across the smooth marble island. He smiles a little at Will bringing up his DND character. He hasn't let himself remember DND since Eddie. “In real life I’m… not. I always run away when I’m scared.”
"That's not true. You stayed with me when I was possessed by the Mind Flayer.”
Mike says too quickly, “But you’re not scary.”
“Not even when I’m being controlled like a puppet by an interdimensional shadow monster?”
He says it like it’s funny, but Mike doesn’t think it’s something he can laugh about.
“Never.”

Summary
The door to Mike’s garage burst open. Mike scrambled backward, body feeling heavy from the water on his clothes. From the door came Will Byers. His bowl-cut was longer and overgrown. He wore a grey shirt with red and blue stripes and red denim shorts. He looked pained. This makes no sense, Mike thought. This was a younger Will, from the summer of 1985. How was Mike back here?
“Will? What's going on?” Mike asked the younger Will.
“Will, come on!” came another voice. “You can’t leave, it’s raining!”
It was Mike at fourteen. He looked awful; he had a bright yellow striped shirt with grey shorts. He was a gangly mess of long limbs. His hair… Mike was embarrassed of his past self.
“Listen, I said I was sorry, alright? It’s a cool campaign, it’s really cool. We’re just not in the mood right now!” the younger Mike explained. Will didn’t stop packing his bag. He spun on Mike.
“Yeah, Mike! That’s the problem, you guys are never in the mood anymore. You’re ruining our party!” the younger Will shouted.
OR: Byler season 5 re-write (canon compliant), including the painting lie, Mike getting Vecna'd, and a proper coming out scene.

Summary
His hands were cupping his face, the pressure of his fingers against the wound making him scream again. He couldn't see, his eyes blurred with tears and pain in a way that made everything fuzzy,
No… wait… only one of his eyes was bouncing around wildly, eyeing the snarling Demogorgon that was sniffing at the fresh splatter of blood on its claw. He was watching it, a keen rising in his chest when he realized that it was only out of one eye.
It was- It must've been the blood that was making it hard to see, the blood was gluing his eye shut, that was why he couldn't see. He cried out when the Demogorgon turned back towards him, flinching away when it roared in his face, tensing like it was about to lunge.

The Demogorgon got to Mike a few seconds earlier, claws ripping through fragile skin and now Mike had to fight to heal and adjust while trying to rescue his sister from an inter dimensional monster. Which is actually pretty hard when he's in pain, drugged to the gills, and can't stop blurting out things that he would really rather not. Case in point: the Quarry, the box of unsent letters in the back of his closet (Ironic, yes, he knows) and his embarrassingly massive crush on his best friend.

Two accidental relationships, zero self-awareness, and a lot of jealousy later, everyone figures it out. Eventually.
