Roy Mustang’s words were laced with a thoughtful hum, and Edward tried not to feel hurt by the misassumption. Many heard his title and assumed it came down to his automail arm and leg. Ed had just hoped the Colonel – after everything – would’ve been different; that Mustang would’ve looked past Edward’s ill-fitting uniform and cripplingly-heavy automail and only see him as a person.
‘‘But,’’ Mustang continued, pensive, ‘‘I think they spelled your title wrong. You’re not Fullmetal, you should be Fullmettle. As in, you are full of mettle.’’
Edward blinked, utterly baffled.
‘‘Mettle, kid. M-E-T-T-L-E.’’
Mustang spelled it out for him. Literally. A genuine smile tugged at the Colonel’s lips as he rumbled out a fleeting chuckle, affectionately sweeping a hand over the top of Edward's golden crown. The boy's throat constricted as an annoying warm blur suddenly invaded his vision. He had experienced more kind words and actions under this man’s brief command than he had experienced in a long, long time.
It was just a shame that it was only a temporary arrangement.

Summary
For as long as he can remember, Zuko knew he would have no say in who he would marry. Anyone familiar with basic royal customs would realize it as well. Marriage wasn’t a luxury or some grand display of love; marriage was for convenience and a power move if done correctly. It meant nothing to Zuko. He was raised with the knowledge that he would one day be sent off to live with a stranger for the sake of his nation, and it didn’t matter if he ended up happy or not. His happiness didn't matter.
All this to say, when his father tells him that he is to marry a stranger from the Southern Water Tribe and use their marriage as an opportunity to spy on the enemy, Zuko knows he has no choice. It's just...he didn't expect this stranger to be so kind to him.

Simon is not the curmudgeonly old man that Soap was picturing; in his mind, this "Simon" was an old war buddy, covered in wary salt-and-pepper hair and soul-deep wrinkles that frame haunted, glazed-over eyes Soap was all too familiar with. Instead, Simon is a young lad, younger than Gary, who just turned twenty-eight this year, yet standing taller than Price, who has to look up to smile at him. From what Soap can tell in the low light, the kid is lanky, tall, gangly, and bow-legged, while still growing into his muscles. Dressed in civilian clothes, Soap can't help but chuckle at the sweater he's got thrown over baggy jeans; a size too big, knitted with a small herd of sheep grazing over a field of small yellow and pink flowers. Around his neck sits a Star of David, silver and recently polished; worn just over the first triangle, like someone rubbing it as a means to self-soothe.
It's his face that takes Soap's breath away.
Simon’s face is nothing short of *mangled*.
