The moment Robby's hand slides into Jack's pants the fantasy shatters. Jack can't get hard, hasn't been able to for weeks, and suddenly three months of "it's fine" come crashing down around them. Sometimes love means taking pills together, laughing through the awkwardness, and rediscovering that even at fifty you can still have sex so good you need to set a timer for the ER.

Robby looks amused. “Are you going to protect me from bears?”
“If I have to,” Jack says, which is better than the more inappropriate, if equally true, I would take a bullet for you. “So, is that a yes?”
Robby’s dark eyes dart, briefly, to the floor, then back up to meet Jack's gaze. “Do you really want me there?”
Or: Twelve hours after Robby leaves on his sabbatical, Jack’s phone buzzes with an incoming call. Jack spends the next few weeks bullying Robby into staying in his guest room, then staying in his tent, and then just staying, period.

After a difficult day at the Pitt where they had to navigate another major catastrophe, Robby finds Jack on the roof on the right side of the railing, but with an ultimatum that knocks the wind out of his sails. Robby has to work out what he can do to stop the one thing that really matters to him from derailing.
“I can’t keep doing this…” Jack says quietly.
“Doing what?”
The night shift attending makes a small, tired motion between them, one finger wagging vaguely in the cold air. “This. It’s not fair man.”
