Before he could give an order, before he could draw breath enough to command silence, a gunshot split the air.
The crack rang through him like a physical blow. For the smallest fraction of a second, he thought it was his own body that had been pierced, that the shock and the ache in his chest were the bite of a bullet. His hand even flew to his sternum as if expecting to feel blood.
And then he saw her.
Elphaba.
Her frame jerked, twisted, the force of the shot stealing her balance. The world seemed to slow to a cruel crawl — her arms flung out, her hair catching the sunlight in a wild tangle, her face half-turned as if to look for him, though he knew she could not have known he was there.
And then she fell.

in the chaos of battle, Fiyero hears the shot before he sees her fall — Elphaba, struck down in the sunlight, her body folding as if the world itself had betrayed her. For a heartbeat, he thinks the pain is his own. For the rest of his life, it will be; the Wicked Witch is dead - but he would make sure that Elphaba would survive.

Comes Maverick’s choked and then cut off cry from the cell across the way. Hangman closed his eyes and sought refuge in the corner to hide his face, just like he has many times before this, trying to escape the sounds of his commanding officer being pushed to the very limits of his endurance. And obviously beyond them.

“Are they sure he’s dead? That both of them are dead?” Viper had asked, grilling Slider over the phone. It appeared that Slider had been elected out of all of the FlyBoy’s to break the news.
“The report says —”
“I don’t care what the damn report says!” Viper had growled, already seeing the lines being drawn and the proper amount of distance being put between the commanding officer’s and any sort of blame. “Have they sent anyone in to make sure?”

“Well, aren’t you the prettiest damn thing, sweetheart?”
Because who was to know that Pete had started talking to the planes because Goose did? Emulating his brother in all but blood, taking confidence in a somewhat odd habit through the ensuing years.
Not noticing the tacky red fingerprints he left on the yellow paint as he hummed a nameless tune, pacing the plane’s perimeter, gauging what whoever owned the plane was up to. Peering into the opened belly of the plane to see the parts missing from the engine, standing on his tiptoes to see from another angle.
Only to be startled by the sound of something shattering behind him.

Pete came back over to them, bearing the new photo in one hand. Bradley handed Natasha a thumbtack, and she pinned the photo to the board, up high where it wouldn’t cover any of the others.
She let her eyes linger over the other photos, then caught herself, glancing to Pete in apology.
But he extended a hand towards the wall of pictures. “Feel free to look at anything, or ask about anything.” His eyes moved to meet Bradley’s. “You too, Baby Goose.”
Bradley shot him an uncertain look, still unsure of his right to any part of Pete’s life, still weighed down by the sheer volume of untold memories. “You sure?” He reached out and picked up his own Navy photo off the shelf above the sink, then waved it at the other photos on the wall above. “I’m not sure I belong in such illustrious company anymore.”
Pete took the photo out of his hand and set it back in its place. “I’m positive, kid.”
