Summary
The Coastal Laboratory for Abnormal Wildlife Studies has found themselves in possession of a live, captive, and dangerous siren—something previously unheard of in the scientific community. Doc, one of their top researchers, is assigned leadership of the study on Specimen 9201223, later nicknamed ‘Martyn’.
Over the course of the project’s run, he and the siren develop an intense rivalry that eventually mellows into a far more complex relationship, as Doc discovers that Martyn is far more human than they’d initially assumed.
Unfortunately, the rest of the organization does not have the siren’s best interests at heart. As Doc grows closer to Martyn, he finds himself forced into increasingly-risky decisions in the name of protecting him, trying to prove his humanity to people who only see a monster.

During the first 6 months of knowing Neil Josten, he’d refused all conversation surrounding shift forms. It was the Foxes’ largest and most anticipated betting pool yet, and one of many more to come surrounding the newest Fox.
It’s not uncommon for people to be private about their shift form, Andrew himself rarely showed it outside of fights. There were also others like Matt or Aaron who preferred it when possible. Neil had taken his privacy to the next level. He was obsessive in his refusal to share even the smallest amount of information with the foxes about his shift-form.
Andrew knew Nicky had bet that it was something really embarrassing, while Renee thought his reluctance to share could’ve been evidence for an inconvenient form, like a dolphin.
He knew it was something else, not embarrassing or aquatic, but that Neil’s form was real. Real where Neil Josten wasn’t more than a broken person’s dream. Andrew hadn’t bothered to bet, had never even asked despite their game.
It had taken Andrew being broken apart and hastily shoved back together, and a palm dragged over hidden scars for him to broach the topic.

Summary
When you die, his blood is still under your nails.
It’s ridiculous, really. It’s been days since his death, since you clutched his body to your chest, since you buried him in a now frozen field of flowers.
Nonetheless, in the moment before you close your eyes for the last time, you can see his blood still underneath your fingernails.

As he wakes up, he feels relief flooding his veins, it feels like a blessing, a second chance. Of course. Of course, it was a dream. Of course, Scott’s waking up next to him and he’s still red, but alive, of course, everything is ok.
It takes Scott ten seconds too long to realise that his bed is freezing cold, to realise that there is no warm body next to him, to realise that he can smell clean pine wood instead of warm earth.
It takes him thirty seconds too long to sit up and look around, to see the four poster bed, the silk sheets, the crown on a lacquered desk next to him.
It takes him a minute too long to realise that everything, everything is wrong.
(Or, Scott wakes up in empires remembering third life. But it's fine, it was just a dream… right?)

Summary
The longer he looked, the more he had to tell himself that it was the cold power washing off the castle that unsettled him, sending a shiver through his whole body, not the fact that the castle looked so lifeless. Not the fact that all the spikes were pointed inwards, as if to contain as opposed to keep away. Of course it was magic. Nothing else.
He was angry, not worried.

After freezing Gem, Scott ran off into the mountains so he wouldn't hurt anyone else. Unlucky for him, fWhip isn't content to let Scott go unpunished for his actions

His wings still had the same base they’d always had - skin and muscle and bone, familiar limbs that he was used to. But rather than feathers, what was growing out of them were small, feather-shaped sheets of ice. They rattled softly together like icicles when he moved.
Scott couldn’t feel cold anymore. But he found as he wrapped his wings around himself (a childish reaction, but an instinctive one) that unlike the beautiful white feathers he was used to, the ice wings couldn’t make him feel warm, either.

Summary
Scott’s found a way to fix up his wings even when they are in this frozen state. Rather than going about it the normal manual way, all he needs to do is use a bit of his magic to make the ice realign itself. Just a quick brush over and everything fixes itself. Mostly.
But it still feels achingly wrong. He wants to do it properly, and sometimes he starts it that way. Always, before he gets very far, it feels too wrong to continue. His wings are still wings, but they don’t feel like that when he thinks too hard about the state they’re in. So he can’t. Not unless he wants to spend the rest of that day an emotional mess.
And that’s why he couldn’t do it today, because he was about to see Jimmy. Even when he theoretically could use the magic method and be done, he’d been too stuck in his own head the entire day to pull himself out and actually do it.
