It’s always been in his head that he’s a freak, something cruel and unforgiving and something that can’t get into its own goddamn pool because he still feels the dark pressure of the Upside Down just beyond it, the vengeful eyes of Barbara Holland inside it. He still feels like he’ll take off his shirt and the dark imprints of his wings, just inches under the skin of his back, will be tattooed on him like a brand for all his new family to see. And he’s terrified of that most of all ‒ the unshakeable imprint of every monstrous thing he is, every terrible thing he’s done, permanent and glaring in the faces of everything anyone knows about Steve ‘the hair’ Harrington.

The words echo off of the bathroom tile and Eddie is as still as a statue. Nobody moves. Steve feels the mortification rising swiftly like water in a well and he wishes that he could drown in it. It doesn't let him, gathering in his chest and his cheeks and making his entire being tremble with its scope and scale.
Eddie’s quiet for probably ten solid seconds, his face utterly blank and impassive as he processes this statement.
Then he shrugs and starts undoing his belt.

Steve continues, completely ignoring Eddie, “You’ll wipe your feet. You’re not dragging dirt all over my car. No hitchhikers. No cutesy road games. No smoking in the car. I’m not paying for all the gas.”
“Ass, gas or grass, got it,” Eddie says, like he's taking this very seriously. He is not taking this seriously.

Summary
He’d been asleep, in his bedroom, when it happened. His parents were screaming from downstairs, and the smell of smoke filled his nose. He found out later, much later, that his mother had forgotten to turn off the stove. One thing led to another, and the entire house was on fire. Steve had just enough time to grab his wallet, a jacket, and some shoes, before he had to leave the house. His parents went out the front, he went out his back window. The fire was so bad that several of the trees were catching fire and it was impossible to round the house and get to the front yard.
Steve Harrington is declared dead, but he is very much alive. So he figured he would just roll with it.

Part of him feared someone had broken into the house, maybe to rob or kill him. But deep down, Steve knew that wasn’t what the case was. He knew exactly who was in his house.
Rounding into the living room, Steve ignored the open door in favor of glaring at the person sitting in Mr. Harrington’s arm chair.
