My head-canon for what took place during the Shinigami Arc, between the Yorozuya trio being thrown in prison until they were released. Gin looked so depressed at the end of the arc, and I imagine that being in prison again would have been really triggering for him. It’s a series of unfortunate coincidences, really.
Every once in a while you face some less-than-ideal circumstances—sometimes you get shot; sometimes you’re running on less hours of sleep than the number of days; sometimes your stitches tear and you have to restitch them fresh again; sometimes you can’t eat; sometimes you have to come back to the shithole people call Gotham; sometimes there’s an Arkham breakout; sometimes you have to deal with said Arkham breakout because you happen to be holing up in Gotham.
Or, if you’re Dick Grayson, who hasn’t had breakfast lately perhaps in an effort to avoid the regular occurrence of the universe shitting in them, then you’re facing all of the above. So yeah, a series of unfortunate coincidences.

His body had grown strong and his mind sharp. He had improved in every way physically and mentally… except, well, his hearing. It had taken quite a hit a few months into his stay on the deadly, star shaped islands.
