He had the ability to, he had the potential. He just needed to do it. If he could do that, he might be able to enjoy things again. He could get through this brief rough patch.
Three weeks later he was back in the basement, staring at the black fuse box.

People say that ten is a young age, and objectively it is, but in retrospection, when your life only totals sixteen years, it isn't that young at all.
Back then, he was just one of Burdock's friends. Burdock was my distant cousin, and he lived in the Seam; the miner's area of District Twelve.
Haymitch was the same. I knew this before being told, purely because of how he looked. Olive skin, grey eyes. However, what stood out to me about him was his hair. It was blonde, and curly, and the look of wonder on his face it accompanied instantly caught my eye.

Steve had a bad feeling, and this wasn't the first time it had happened.
For as long as he could remember, he had always had hunches. Hunches about events that hadn't even happened yet but warned him before the shoe could drop. He was used to them. To the bad omens. To the anxiety they brought.
Maybe, that's why he was as tense as a coiled spring when they entered Hawkins Lab, as gray as decayed as the rest of the Upside Down. But not even a hunch could have prepared him for what happened that day. He couldn't have braced himself for the party splitting up. He couldn't have braced himself for an argument with Dustin, much less the boy's violent reaction at him bringing Eddie into the conversation.
He couldn't have expected to crack his head open into the ground, nor the world that waited for him when he opened his eyes once again. Neither the spider that bit him, or the powers that would later bring him.
And when this peculiar world welcomed him, he couldn't help but wonder.
Was that Munson? In a big sign? Wearing a hero-like costume?

A journey through Steve’s relationships with himself and the most important people in his life: a lesbian, a know-it-all kid et al., his ex-girlfriend, a DM (whatever the hell that is), the DM’s uncle, and everyone else who seems to have wormed their way into his life since 1983.
(Or, how getting trapped in Hell on Earth with Eddie “The Freak” Munson puts every other relationship Steve has ever had into perspective.)

God, he has to stop looking at him.
“You call me Captain,” Steve answers, finally breaking eye contact to look instead at Hargrove’s fingers flicking his lighter again and again. Steve hopes the words say what he can’t: you were kind to me. From the way his fingers still, and the soft, barely-there pleased surprise blooms in Hargrove's scent beneath the rage, Steve thinks they might.
Or: Billy moves to the deadest part of the United States, meets the prettiest boy he's ever fucking seen, starts writing poetry, and everything - literally everything, from common courtesy to the food chain in Hawkins to his already-rocky home life to something so basic as his secondary gender - goes to fucking shit. For the better. Steve has panic attacks, spends most of his time alone, and swallows everything he's ever felt on reflex. And then he meets Billy, and everything gets, well- better. Much better.

Wayne’s been gone for less than ten minutes when there’s a scratch at the trailer door. Luckily Eddie is trying desperately to finish his English assignment so he doesn’t have his music on and can actually hear it. Because this is his fucking year and he’s graduating even if he has to kill someone to do it, damn it.
When he opens the door, the dog is sitting at the bottom of the steps, just as big and fluffy as Eddie remembered. In the fading sunlight, his fur is lighter than Eddie thought, lots of white on his stomach, chest and cheeks. The rest is light gray. The dog bounds up the steps, tongue hanging out, as soon as Eddie motions him in.
