“If I hadn’t already agreed to go to this conference, I’d offer to go with you,” Robby said casually. “Show you how it’s done. I’ve got a good track record as a plus-one, too.” Dennis had to say something. To interrupt. To shut this down. But what was he supposed to say? No, you can’t be my plus one, because I lied about my cousin, and there is no wedding, and it seems a little weird to bring a date to a fucking funeral– “Apparently parents love it when you bring home a doctor.”
And just like that, the bubble popped.
“I’m not gay,” Dennis snapped.
He had never hated the sound of his own voice as much as he did right then.

Summary
The remnants of the building illuminated the man before him. He stood still, abnormally so. Dennis almost didn’t see him at first, but now he couldn’t tear his gaze off him. Flames dancing around his hair like a halo. A saint to rival all saints. He was older, wiser, stronger. At the very least his voice carried the authority that Dennis could never muster up himself. Tears were still running down his face when the man turned abruptly as if snapping into action.
“Don’t just stand there, Whitaker,” the tone was gruff and strained. “Let’s help them get water.”
He let the calm wash over him in waves. He could do this. Follow simple orders, be useful. He could not think about the glint of red in the eyes of his companion or the fact that Dennis brought this calamity upon the village. Everything else could wait for the morning.OR: a hucklerobby vampire AU set in a very vague past. Dennis and Robby arrive at a village and the church just so happens to burn down. Coincidentally, of course.

Summary
Dennis lays in the bed with a stillness so absolute it feels staged. A ventilator breathes for him in measured sighs, the sound too rhythmic to be human. It almost looks like he’s a kid pretending to sleep in the backseat of his parents’ car, hoping to be carried inside by strong paternal arms.
Robby would do anything for that to be the case. Instead, it is sedation that has smoothed away the sharpness from Dennis’s features.
It is a heart attack that has made him so still.
Or,
Dennis Whitaker fails to clear and gets shocked by a defibrillator. He takes it as a punishment for sinful eyes that can't seem to look away from Dr. Robby and decides not to tell anyone. The ER keeps moving, but Dennis's heart doesn't. It terribly, horribly doesn't.

Dennis’ knee vibrates his backpack that rests against his shins in the dirty pick-up truck, Michael's warm and large hand covers his thigh. His thumb rubs soft circles on the inside, silently trying to comfort the younger man. It's too early in the morning to make conversation, and Dennis' anxieties are much higher than normal.
This isn’t like his normal rotations. This is the rotation that has been his biggest fear. Not only is everything so stressful but it is the rotation where he and Michael have to pretend to not know each other, and more.

Shane took the phone away from his ear and held it between both hands as though he were praying. He realized he was on the floor and didn’t know how he got there. He was crying. He was fairly certain he was hyperventilating.
His brain was desperately trying to grab at anything. Any thread of logic. Any idea of what to do next.
I have to see him.
Yes. That made sense. Shane needed to get to Tampa. Now. He would go there. He would find Ilya. Ilya would be fine. They would be together. He would see him. Tell him how much he loved him. He had to go. He had to go now.
