Fateheart: A Starless Seaquel

Summary:

Fateheart begins as Erin Morgenstern's The Starless Sea ends. This story tells of the discovery and birth of the newest Harbour upon the Starless Sea, following three familiar heroes and introducing some new ones as the era of new myths dawns. The original book leaves Zachary and Dorian "in a long-awaited kiss upon the Starless Sea, tangled in salvation and desire and obsolete cartography.

But this is not where their story ends.
Their story is only just beginning."

This is the next chapter.

Notes:

This book started as a one-shot, retelling the final moment we have with Zachary and Dorian from Dorian's perspective. As such, 'Fateheart' follows on directly from 'The Starless Sea' - so closely that there is one chapter of overlap, this story departing from that final scene between them, and picking up Kat's story exactly as she crosses the threshold between worlds, and from Morgenstern's book into this one.

Fateheart is written in homage to the first book - as a continuation of its plot and a celebration of its characters, its style, and its themes. This is fanfiction, but it is also designed to be a direct sequel. I cannot speak to you of the outpouring of wonder the original book evoked in me. I can only show you. Here it is.

HELLO THIS WORK IS CURRENTLY UNDERGOING A MASSIVE RE-EDIT

I have decided to comb back through this entire mammoth piece of writing and hopefully produce a sort of second edition version which is more concise, more effective, and therefore more fun to read. I am currently about halfway through and have updated Part 1 of this story to the second edition version.

I will probably do parts 2 and 3 as I go as well (it is currently the 16th June 2026 so if you're reading this more than a couple months after the fact then maybe I got flattened by a double decker bus or something sorry). Because hey, it’s fanfiction and maybe you like the longer/less polished version! If there’s anything about that link that’s not working do comment and let me know and I will fix it.

The new version does not make any significant plot/characterisation changes, but there are quite a few rhythm and pacing changes which alter the chapter order.

I am partially doing an edit because I am getting a special custom-made bound copy for myself and I wanted the best possible version of the story for it, and partially because I care deeply about this story and it deserves to be its best possible version.
